French Media Denies Viral Cocaine Rumors Involving President Macron During Ukraine Trip
FRANCE – French President Emmanuel Macron is facing a wave of online speculation after a video from his Sunday train ride into Ukraine went viral, with some social media users accusing him of possessing cocaine during the journey.
The footage, filmed as reporters entered a cabin aboard the train from Poland to Ukraine, shows Macron quickly grabbing a small white item from a table while seated alongside German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The brief moment triggered a frenzy online, with users claiming the item resembled a bag of cocaine. Others suggested that Merz was holding what looked like a straw or spoon used for drug use.
The French media outlet Libération was quick to push back on the rumors, calling them “conspiracy theories.” The publication stated there is “no evidence” to support the claims and insisted the item in Macron’s hand was a handkerchief, while Merz was holding a drink stirrer.
“There is nothing suspicious in the video,” the outlet wrote, accusing social media of fueling false narratives to undermine European leaders amid their support for Ukraine.
Neither the Élysée Palace nor the German or British governments have commented publicly on the video. Still, the clip continues to circulate widely, with many online remaining skeptical of the official explanation.
The three leaders were en route to Kyiv as part of a high-level show of support for Ukraine in its ongoing war with Russia.
