"PDP Planning To Rig Saturday’s Poll" Oshiomole Insists

Emmanuel Mogbede

Mr Adams Oshiomhole, the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, has said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is not ready to win elections through legitimate votes, but through illegally procured votes and thuggery.

He stated this on Tuesday in Abuja at a news conference while reacting to a critical statement made by Atiku Abubakar, the PDP Presidential Candidate on President Muhammadu Buhari’s riot act to thugs and ballot box snatchers.

President Buhari at the APC expanded National Caucus meeting on Monday, warned that any politician that sponsored thugs or ballot box snatchers, would be dealt with by security operatives.

The President said that security operatives have been instructed to deal with such persons.

Oshiomhole said no responsible candidate or individual should find fault in the President’s directive, adding that it is only candidates who rely on thuggery that would fault it.

“Atiku has called on the President to retract his instruction to security agencies regarding violence, ballot box thieves, and other electoral malpractices.

“The question is how such instruction disturbs anyone that is truly interested in free, fair and credible elections,” Oshiomhole said and described PDP and Atiku’s reactions as shameful.

Oshiomhole said the APC was not surprised because PDP has marshalled plans to get to power by all means possible.

The APC national chairman said that the option of one man one vote is not on PDP’s table.

He said Atiku by his statement has admitted that he is not popular by recently claiming that he had two geopolitical zones while the APC has four other geopolitical zones.

Oshiomhole stressed that Atiku and the PDP should prepare for the shock of their lives on the election day.

“The South South and South East are not oblivious of the unprecedented developmental achievements recorded in the zones under the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC administration,”he said.

This contrasts with PDP’s wasted years in government.

He maintained that the good people of the South-South, South-East and all the geopolitical zones would speak through their legitimate votes, not the procured ballots planned by the PDP.

Oshiomhole noted that in the aftermath of the configured card readers recently recovered from PDP agents in some states, its presidential candidate, Atiku, had gone to town with face-saving conspiracies that the APC had imported slow-working card readers from China.

He said Atiku claimed that the card readers would be deployed to the South-South and South-East which Atiku considers his stronghold.

Oshiomhole wondered how Atiku got to know where the card readers were made, if he does not have informants in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He debunked allegations by Atiku that the APC planned to shut down communication network on election days.

Oshiomhole said it was illogical that a party that was in a contest with clear superior numerical support would shut down communication on election day, as this would not only affect the PDP.

He recalled that the APC had earlier reported the PDP’s plot before last Saturday’s postponed elections by the INEC national chairman.

“The recent arrest of several armed PDP political thugs and recovery of INEC card readers and arms from PDP agents in some states point directly to the PDP’s plan as revealed by the security reports,” Oshiomhole said.

PDP’s illegal plot requires improved surveillance by security agencies, particularly the Department of State Services (DSS), Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and allied agencies, Oshiomhole suggested.

He urged the agencies to check illicit financial flows and movement in the PDP camp in the run-up to the general elections....

Enugu Clean Team drums support for Ugwuanyi's re-election

...Prays for gov's victory at the polls

One thousand youths recruited by the Enugu State Government to clean up the state under the Enugu Clean Team Project on Tuesday, celebrated Mass for Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi's resounding victory at the polls and more successes in his endeavours.

The jubilant members of the team, who declared support for Gov. Ugwuanyi, presented their stance through the Clean Team Project's coordinator, Rev. Fr. Michael Amobi Ogbu.

They informed the governor that they were impressed with his peace and good governance initiatives, unprecedented achievements in all spheres of development and relentless commitment to employment generation and human empowerment.

Speaking, Fr. Ogbu commended Gov. Ugwuanyi for fulfilling his earlier promise to double the number of the team with an additional 1000, stressing that "it is not easy to absorb 1000 people in our society".

He disclosed that the exercise has recorded a huge success in the last 8 months in terms of its noble objective of achieving "a cleaner and healthier Enugu State" and "human empowerment".

The cleric added that the people of Enugu State, irrespective of class and academic qualifications, have appreciated the good work of the team and shown great interest in the project, revealing that "more than 8000 applicants" have so far applied for the second batch of the recruitment exercise of 1000 members.

Fr. Ogbu thanked Gov. Ugwuanyi for appointing him as coordinator of the project and "for giving me the liberty to employ those I feel will work me for efficiency and effective service delivery".

His words: "Your Excellency, we have prayed for you in this Mass. This 2019 election, we stand with Gburugburu. This is our own way of saying thank you to you".

2019... It will surely end in Praise, for Enugu State is truly in the Hands of God! #amokelouis

Snatch Ballot Box, Face Grave Consequence, IG Echoes Buhari

The acting Inspector General of Police (IG) Mohammed Adamu Tuesday in Abuja, echoed President Muhammadu Buhari, threatening that anyone who engages in ballot box snatching during Saturday’s poll will face the music.

Adamu, who issued the threat while briefing journalists after a meeting of service chiefs, including the IG with Buhari in the State House, said the heads of security agencies met with the president, reviewed the security situation in the country and resolved to ensure adequate security during the polls.

According to him, thuggery, touting and ballot box snatching during the polls will be met with grave resistance.

By his declaration, the IG was only echoing Buhari who at the national caucus’ meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the party secretariat in Abuja on Monday, said he had ordered the security agents to deal ruthlessly with anyone who snatches ballot boxes or attempts to undermine the integrity of the polls even at the cost of his own life.

Buhari also said any politician portraying himself to be popular in his domain and hence hoping to exploit such popularity to hire thugs to snatch ballot boxes during the elections, will do so at the expense of his own life.

The president’s comment has however been condemned by many, who reminded him that the punishment for ballot box snatching is imprisonment for a period of time and not instant death as threatened by the president.

But the IG restated the president’s threat, insisting that whoever engages in any criminal act on election day should be prepared to bear the consequence.

However, Adamu encourages law abiding citizens to freely go out on Saturday and cast their votes without any fear of molestation.

He assured citizens that security agents will duly protect them and guarantee their safety.

“Today, members of the security community and intelligence community came and briefed Mr. President on the security situation in the country.

“We deliberated on the consequences and came up with the resolve to further provide adequate security within the country so that the electorate will come out and cast their votes without any fear of molestation.

“Every Nigerian is encouraged to come out on the election day and cast his or her vote without any fear of molestation. The security personnel are ready and prepared to protect everybody.

“Anybody that feels that he can come out and disrupt process should have a rethink because that situation will not be allowed. If you plan and allow yourself to be used as touts, whatever happens to you, you will take it.

“Ballot box snatching, ballot buying, thuggery will never be allowed. Anybody that is planning to snatch ballot boxes or planning to be used as a tout, will have him or herself to blame on election day. So, you better don’t allow yourself to be used,” he threatened.

Customs Detain Four Officers Over Civilian Friend’s Killing

The Nigeria Customs Service has said that four members of the patrol team involved in the killing of their civilian ‘friend’, Godwin Onoja, have been detained.

It also stated that a panel set up to investigate the killing could not conclude its investigation because the officer, who accidentally shot Onoja, Destiny Onebamho, was receiving medical attention after he was attacked by motorists following the killing.

Onoja was shot by a member of the five-man Customs patrol team while they were trying to allegedly extort N5,000 bribe from a group of travellers coming from Europe at the Sagamu end of the Lagos-Ore-Benin Expressway.

It was gathered that the victim was shot during an altercation between the officers of the Federal Operations Unit of the NCS, Ikeja, Lagos, and the travellers, who boarded an Iyare Motors’ passenger bus travelling to Benin City from Lagos.

A statement from the NCS Public Relations Officer, Joseph Attah, on Tuesday, said Onebamho would be questioned by the panel once fit to enable it conclude its investigation and recommend appropriate actions to be taken against the operatives.

According to the statement, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali (retd.) has directed a thorough investigation into the immediate and remote causes of the incident with a view to ensuring that justice is served.

Attah stated, “Following the unfortunate incident of Sunday, February 17, 2019, at the Sagamu interchange involving operatives of the Federal Operations Unit, Zone ‘A’, which led to the death of a fellow citizen, Mr Godwin Onoja, the Nigeria Customs Service has continued to maintain close contact with the bereaved family.

“We are pained by this sad development and share the grief of losing a fellow compatriot in a seemingly avoidable circumstance. We will continue to take every necessary step to cushion the pain associated with losing a dear one.

“In line with this directive, the investigation panel headed by the Zonal Coordinator, Zone ‘A’, ACG Kaycee Ekekezie, has interrogated and detained four members of the patrol team.

“The panel could not immediately conclude the investigation because the actual officer, ASCI Destiny Onebamho, whose rifle accidentally discharged and killed Onoja, is presently receiving medical attention following the attack on him owing to the unfortunate incident. He will face the panel as soon as he is fit to do so to enable the panel conclude investigation and recommend appropriate actions.”

Attah added that the ongoing investigation would be holistic and would involve looking at the weapon handling skills of the operatives and actions that must be taken by the service to prevent future occurrences.

"Atiku Working Hand In Glove With Inec's ICT Unit", Oshiomole Alleges

Adamas Oshimhole, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has accused Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), of conniving with the ICT unit of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to rig Saturday's election.

Oshimhole made this accusation on Tuesday in Abuja at a press conference while reacting to Atiku's statement that APC imported telephone-like devices from China to tamper with card readers.

His words: "The implication of this is that assuming without conceding that this allegation is true, it means Atiku is working hand-in-hand with the ICT unit in INEC to know the kind of machines that are deployed to where.

"We recognise that INEC is independent. I am not able to determine the type of card readers that it will deploy. I am not in the position to identify where they were imported from. But If Atiku has all of these details, it shows that Atiku is working hand in glove with people within INEC as to know where machines are imported from."

Oshimole maintained that Atiku cannot win this election going by the record of 2003 election when he lost his base in Adamawa. He added that he can only remain a permanent presidential hopeful that Nigeria will never have.

He said that Atiku's mission is to set the country on fire in order to become President even if for him to preside over a graveyard. He noted that Nigerians will vote without any intimidation, adding that the President is right to affirm that anybody who resorts to thuggery should be dealt with squarely.

Oshiomole said that thuggery is anonymous with violence, and the world is unanimous that violence should be removed from the electio. He added that Atiku's opposition to the President's instruction to the Military has exposed PDP's plan to use thuggery in preventing the election from holding or reducing voter turnout

APC Is In Total Control Of INEC, El-Rufai & Zakari In Charge Of ICT - PDP

The Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, has accused the All Progressives Congress, APC, of being in total control of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

It also claimed that Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai and Amina Zakari are in charge of the Information and Communication Technology, ICT, of the electoral body.

National chairman of the PDP, Uche Secondus, made this claim on Tuesday during PDP’s emergency National Executive Council, NEC, meeting in Abuja.

He was reacting to the allegation by the APC national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, on Monday that INEC informed the PDP before postponing the presidential and National Assembly elections earlier scheduled to hold on February 16.

He said, “Since last Saturday they have been talking and making claims, they even accused INEC of telling us before postponing the election. All they have been saying is they are not aware, they don’t know but I dare to say that the government is in totally in control of INEC.

“This government appointed one of the vendors who is from the Villa and the other is from Niger State and they are members of APC.

“The ICT of INEC is totally controlled by El-Rufai and Amina Zakari, so I don’t see how they will turn around overnight. But maybe it’s part of their plans to win, but Nigerians know the facts. This government is in control of INEC.”

Speaking at the event, Senate President and Director PDP Presidential Campaign Council, Bukola Saraki, stated, that Nigerians accepted the opposition party because they have become tired of “unemployment and poverty”.

“Nigerians are tired of insecurity, unemployment and poverty. Nobody wants to be insecure, unemployed or poor. This is why our message has resonated across the country.”

He then called on Nigerians to come out to vote during the rescheduled elections on Saturday, saying “We have four more days to go. I want to appeal to Nigerians, do not let them frustrate you. When there is a low turnout, they can rig, but if you come out to vote, they cannot.

“When you come out to vote on Saturday, do you want a Nigeria that that adheres to the rule of law, or do you want a Nigeria that is governed by jungle justice?

“On Saturday, when you come out to vote, vote for Nigeria.”

We Are Now Ready For Election - INEC

$

After the tongue lashing by virtually all segments of the public for last Saturday’s last minute postponement of the presidential and National Assembly election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday began the public confidence rebuilding process, telling Nigerians that it is now ready to hold the poll rescheduled for Saturday nationwide.

Its Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, in his first progress report told the media in Abuja that the hitches that caused the poll shift have been cleared and that the fresh time-lines for the conduct of the election are now being met.

Specifically, he said the commission has achieved 98 per cent reconfiguration of its smart card readers, saying it is a significant milestone towards the conduct of the election and assured that the remaining two per cent would be completed today.

Responding to media reports that a couple of its senior officials are being quizzed by the Department of State Security (DSS), raising fears that the commission’s work might be hampered, Yakubu denied the reports and said no director or national commissioner of the commission has been arrested by the DSS.

However, Akelicious’s checks revealed that six senior staff members of the commission, including Professor Okechukwu Ibeano, Mr. Festus Okoye, Mr. Osaze Uzi and others, were invited by DSS for a chat.

But Yakubu stated: “No commissioner of the commission was picked up by any security agency; no house of any commissioner of INEC was raided; no any commissioner of INEC has been picked up by security agencies. The particular commissioner you are referring to that was mentioned in the social media is as we speak, in his office in the commission. Similarly, no six directors were picked up by any security agencies.”

The chairman revealed that by 4p.m. on Monday, all issues relating to the delivery of the materials were identified and virtually addressed.

According to him, “Last Saturday, the commission, after extensive review of our preparedness for the 2019 general election, decided that it was necessary to reschedule the elections by one week.

‘’As I explained to stakeholders, we were constrained to shift the polls due to severe challenges and lapses we experienced with arrival and distribution of sensitive materials, as well as the fires that gutted some of our offices in quick succession, destroying several election materials.”

He said INEC had identified six areas covering three broad areas like deployment of materials, movement of personnel and reconfiguration of smart card readers.

Yakubu said: “Let me, therefore, present to you the level of implementation so far achieved as follows; by 4p.m. yesterday, all issues relating to the delivery of the materials were identified and virtually addressed. Ballot papers, result sheets and a host of non-sensitive materials are now in location across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“Our state offices commenced the process of inviting stakeholders to the Central Bank of Nigeria to examine the retrieved materials deployed last week and to witness the batching of materials according to local government areas. This is on-going at the moment and is expected to be completed today, Tuesday 19, February 2019.

“The movement of materials to LGAs for batching according to wards and polling units shall take place on Wednesday, 20 and Thursday, 21 February 2019.

“All Registration Area Centres (RACs) are to be activated by 9a.m. on Friday, February 22, 2019. Personnel and materials should be at the RACs by mid-day on Friday, February 22, 2019.

“Refresher training for ad hoc personnel should take place at the RACs on Friday, February 22, 2019. Personnel and materials must arrive at the Polling Units latest 7a.m. on Saturday 23, February 2019. Opening of polls nationwide will take place at 8a.m. on Saturday, February 23, 2019.”

Explaining further on the rationale for a week long postponement of the polls, the INEC Chairman said; “You would recall that in my address to stakeholders, I mentioned that we intended to reschedule the elections for just 24 hours to enable us to deliver the final batch of sensitive materials for the elections.

‘’However, our ICT team notified us that it would require more time to reconfigure the Smart Card Readers in time for the elections. Let me explain why. The Smart Card Readers (SCRs) are configured to only open for use at 8a.m. on Election Day, and to automatically shut down by 10p.m.

‘’This is designed to forestall any illegal use of the SCRs before the appointed time of elections. There are roughly 180,000 SCRs to be deployed for the elections and the ICT team said that they would require 5-6 days to complete the configuration.

‘’I am glad to say that as at today, about 98 per cent of the SCRs have been reconfigured and we are confident that by tomorrow all would be ready, which is a day earlier than scheduled. ”

The INEC chairman also stated that campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections shall now end at midnight on Thursday, February 21, 2019, while campaigns for the governorship, state assembly and FCT Area Council elections shall end at midnight Thursday, March 7, 2019.

He explained that preparations for governorship, state assembly and FCT Area Council elections are well underway, saying already, the sensitive materials for the elections have started arriving at various locations for onward movement to various CBN branches across the country.

Yakubu further stated: “Indeed, some of these materials arriving through our airports have been erroneously construed by some people as materials for the elections holding this weekend. I want to reassure you all that all materials for the rescheduled presidential and National Assembly elections next Saturday are already in the states ready for deployment to LGAs, Ward and Polling Units.

‘’We have learnt a lesson from the preparations for the elections holding this weekend. For this reason, we shall start the movement of materials for the next elections early to ensure that nothing disrupts our process.

“While we fully understand the disappointment and even anger that followed that rescheduling of the elections on February 16, I wish to appeal to stakeholders to be more dispassionate and circumspect in their comments in order not to overheat the polity.

‘’The commission is focusing on the elections to be held on February 23 and 9th March 2019 to ensure that they are free, fair and credible. We urge all Nigerians to participate fully in the elections, notwithstanding the disappointment caused by the rescheduling of dates.”

He said the commission would continue to speak to Nigerians daily to let them know the extent of readiness of the commission.

"INEC Officials Colluding With Gov Emmanuel", Akpabio Alleges

Former Akwa Ibom Governor Senator Godswill Akpabio has alleged some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were colluding with Governor Udom Emmanuel to compromise the forthcoming elections.

He accused some of the INEC officials of being not completely independent, alleging they have been compromised by Governor Emmanuel.

Akpabio told newsmen in Abuja the governor has deployed huge sums to entice voters and electoral officials.

The former governor alleged Emmanuel has no single project to show and has consistently told the people that there is no money in the state, even after collecting refunds spent to construct federal roads by his government.

He, however, expressed confidence President Muhammadu Buhari will emerge victorious in Saturday’s rescheduled presidential elections.

The former Senate Minority Leader said: “You know that INEC is an Independent body but some of its officials are not totally Independent.

“In some states, we have noticed some unholy alliances with the government in power in those states.

“For example, in a place like Akwa Ibom, we have seen the body language of the government, which clearly shows that they will not be able to conduct free and fair elections, giving all the parties, particularly the APC, a level playing field.

“This is very easy for you to see and from the body language of people they have recruited to run the affairs, including the ad hoc staff and other support staff for the election.

“This can be seen from the body language and the kind of things that the trainees are being told. What the National Chairman observes about opposition against APC does exist.”

He went on: “There are two things happening in my state. One is a lot of fake news coming from the opposition and secondly, is massive deployment of funds to buy people.

“James Hardley Chase said in one of his books that fear is the key that opens the wallet of the rich.“He told the people that there was no money to do project and so, there is nothing on the ground in the state.

“They have not been able to commission a single project. All the big me that come to my state, they take the churches to pray.

“When former President Obasanjo came, they took him to church to pray but when they go to other states, they commission projects but nothing to commission in my state.

“So, now that people are clamouring for change, money is now flowing all over the state. Fear opens the wallet of the rich that is what is happening to the opposition in my state.

“You can only rig election in a place where you are popular. Today, the APC is all over Akwa Ibom state.
80-90 percent of the people are APC. So, when you go to rig election and you don’t succeed, you bring anarchy.”

On the chances of Buhari, he said: “Nigerians know the difference between apples and oranges. The reality is that this President has done very well considering the fact he took us out of recession.

“He met many projects on ground and is completing them such as the railway lines. He has invested in massive infrastructure never seen before.

“I have been a governor and I know that federal budget usually contain 70 and sometimes 80 percent of recurrent expenditure and sometimes, what is left is less than 20 percent for capital projects.

“But this President has been able to block the loopholes in the system and free more money for developmental purposes.“The TSA is a major innovation and as you know, some ministries were operating more than 50 accounts.

“Today, we have been able to mobilise those funds into one account and over 30 percent of the budget now goes for capital projects. Nigerians are clamouring for infrastructural change and better educational facilities.”

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) in Kano State, Malam Salihu Sagir Takai, has called on eligible voters across the country to come out en masse and vote during Saturday’s rescheduled presidential and National Assembly elections.

Malam Takai, who made the appeal in a statement issued by his spokesman, Auwalu Mu’azu, said the call became necessary in view of the apparent anger, frustration, shock and surprise expressed by Nigerians over the sudden postponement of the elections by INEC.

He noted that except well-meaning Nigerians across all walks of life rose to the occasion and mobilised voters to participate in the rescheduled polls, the exercise might be marred by voter apathy.

“In the light of the seeming disappointment of Nigerians at the polls shift, it has become necessary for all of us to work assiduously towards making sure that we encourage the electorate to come out in their numbers and take part in the coming rescheduled elections,” Takai said.

In the same vein, Malam Takai drummed support for the re-election bid of President Muhammadu Buhari to enable him to continue with the good work he started for the country.

The Vande Bharat Express made its first journey from New Delhi to the Hindu holy city of Varanasi on Friday after being inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi.

But on its return the following day it collided with cattle causing the brakes to fail, according to Indian Railways.

It comes after rail bosses were left red faced when they were mocked for altering footage of the train on social media to make it look twice as fast.

Soon after the collision with the cow, the drivers noticed smoke billowing from the last four carriages and the electricity stopped working.

'The train later experienced technical issues and was stranded on the way to Delhi,' Indian Railways spokeswoman Smita Vats Sharma told AFP.

The train reached the capital 'safely' ahead of its first commercial journey on Sunday, she added.

The accident is the latest controversy for the express train - touted as India's fastest and a special project of Modi's government.

Last week India's rail minister Piyush Goyal was mocked after he tweeted a digitally altered video of the train zipping by a station at lightning speed.

He was later accused of altering the video to make the train appear faster, triggering widespread social media ridicule.

A member of a trainspotters Facebook group wrote under the Twitter post that the video appeared to be sped up footage he had taken in December.

The Vande Bharat Express, touted as India's fastest train was built under the Modi government's flagship 'Make in India' programme.

Cattle obstructions on roads and rail tracks are common in India, particularly in Uttar Pradesh state where Saturday's collision happened.

Since coming to office, Modi's nationalist party launched a crackdown on the slaughter of cows - considered sacred by many Hindus - which has led to crisis numbers of stray and unwanted cattle.

India is struggling to upgrade its colonial-era railway system, which relies on creaking and outdated infrastructure to transport 23 million travellers each day.

The locally-made express train has a rated top speed of 180 kilometres (111 miles) an hour, 20 percent quicker than the next fastest train in service.

Railway authorities say the train is expected to reduce the 850-kilometre journey between the two cities from 14 to eight hours.

The distribution of Trader Moni, a no-interest loan scheme championed by the Nigerian government, was disrupted by violence on Tuesday.

During the distribution at Lafenwa Market in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, on Tuesday, trouble started when the traders were allegedly asked for their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) numbers in exchange for the no-interest loan.

The Nation newspaper reported that the market leaders, who led the distribution, were taken away by some persons, who were about 50 in number.

Members of the Abeokuta North West Local Council Development Area (LCDA) were accused of leading the hoodlums to hijack the process.

Monsuru Shorunke, Chairman of the LCDA, took responsibility for the action, stating that he had heard that some people came to the market to collect names of traders, including PVC numbers, in exchange for money.

He said: "We heard that some people came to Lafenwa Market, collected people's PVCs from the traders with their names and PVC numbers.

"Governor Ibinkunle said we should go out. It was Governor Amosun that sent us. I was in front of the Governor when we heard the Information. So, I collected Iyaloja's phone number from Akintona. We took Iyaloja to the Governor's house alongside the Babaloja of Lafenwa.

"We believed it was wrong for them to come and collect people's PVC with numbers before the election day. That was what they came to do at Lafenwa."

My Purported Suspension As Council Chairman Is Null And Void - Alao-Akala's Son

The chairman of Ogbomoso North Local Government Area of Oyo state, Olamijuwon Alao-Akala (JP), who was suspended by four councillors in his council area on Monday, has stated that his alleged suspension is unconstitutional, illegal and a nullity as only a validly inaugurated legislative arm of the local government council has the power to suspend him.

Olamijuwon, the son of the gubernatorial candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) in Oyo state and former governor of the state, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala had decamped from the All Progressive Congress (APC) to his father’s party, ADP, last Thursday.

He added that he is taking the purported suspension with a pinch of salt as it has no legal or constitutional backing, urging the councillors- elect to wait be inaugurated before confronting him with illegal suspension and not cause unnecessary chaos in the peaceful town of Ogbomoso

On Tuesday, 19th February, 2019, I received a letter conveying my purported suspension from office as the Executive Chairman Ogbomoso North Local Government Area of Oyo State by minority councilors-elect, through the Head of Local Government Administration, Mr. M.F Afolabi.

My purported suspension by 4 of the 10 elected councilors is illegal, null and void. The legislative councils of local government areas in the State are yet to be inaugurated since our elections in May 2018; therefore, the meeting where my purported suspension was agreed was unconstitutional.

It is noteworthy that the 1999 Nigerian Constitution As Amended and the Oyo State Local Government Administration Law clearly state the procedures for suspension and/or removal of a duly elected council chairman. Based on the provisions of the constitutions, ONLY A VALIDLY INAUGURATED LEGISLATIVE ARM IF THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT COUNCIL can deliberate and recommend suspension and/or removal of an executive Chairman to the the state House of assembly for a final decision. Unfortunately for the 4 councilors-elect, they are yet to be inaugurated neither do their number constitute the required quorum (two-thirds of the Councillors-elect) in the circumstances.

It is my honest suggestion to the Councillors-Elect and the purveyors of violence and impunity nudging them on, to exercise some patience until their inauguration, for them to now confront me with whatever grievances they may have against me, instead of acting without capacity, an action that appears to be a prelude towards throwing the peaceful town of Ogbomoso into some artificial and avoidable crises.

Stemming from the above, I have decided to take the purported suspension with a pinch of salt, since same is predicated on a non existent foundation. Our courts have long settled it, as enunciated in the popular case of UAC V. Macfoy that ".....you cannot put something on nothing, and expect it to stand". Hence, this is a comedy of the absurd, and we urge all parties concerned to at least, pretend to act a bit of honour, even if they lack same.

My attention has also been drawn to the laughable statement made by the Chairman of APC in Ogbomoso North LGA, Mr. Bukola Badmus, wherein he purportedly suspended me from the party, APC, even when I have since left the APC for a truly progressive party Action Democratic Party (ADP). This is not only laughable, but a pointer to the degree of frustration and looming failures that seems stare in the face of the APC of Ogbomoso North LG in the coming elections. I am already out of that sinking ship, I wish them well.

I want to allay the fears of the citizens and residents of Ogbomoso North LGA who voted me into office, that I am still in charge and my 3years mandate shall be dedicated to serving you better. Once again, I pledge not to betray the trust and confidence you have in me.

Long live Ogbomosoland!

Long Live Oyo State!!

Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!!!

SIGNED:

Hon.Olamijuwonlo Ayodeji Alao-Akala JP

Executive Chairman,

Ogbomoso North LGA, Kinira.

"Akpabio Is A Political Pensioner" - Dino Melaye

Godswill Akpabio, lawmaker representing Akwa Ibom North has been described as a political pensioner by his colleague, Dino Melaye.

Messrs Akpabio and Melaye are Senators at the upper legislative chamber of the National Assembly.

Mr Melaye representing Kogi West made the description on Tuesday when he featured alongside Festus Keyamo, the presidential spokesman of President Muhammadu Buhari’s campaign team, on a programme on Channels Television: The Verdict.

The duo had a heated argument attacking and defending Mr Buhari’s choice of punishment on ballot box snatchers.

The president had declared extra-judicial killings for those who might want to thwart the electoral will of Nigerians in the rescheduled general election expected to commence on Saturday.

The Nigerian leader said he has ordered security operatives to ruthlessly deal with ballot snatchers at the scene of the crime without recourse to court trial as stipulated in the constitution.

The Army and the Police have all nodded and are willing to carry out the directive.

After the shouting match, the moderator asked for their final summarization of what is expected on Saturday.

For Melaye, he said Nigerians are tired of the incumbent leader and has chosen Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as their next leader. He said the opposition party will reclaim states it had lost in the 2015 general elections.

For the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), who claimed that the president’s choice of punishment on ballot snatchers is constitutional, the likes of Mr Abubakar, Bukola Saraki, Senate President, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso among others who left the All Progressive Congress (APC) might have made minor contributions but that did not win the election for his principal.

The lawyer said being a plus and minus situation, the party has also received into its fold politicians like Akpabio, Uduaghan, Orji Kalu, Ken Nnamani among others.

When he mentioned the name of the former Akwa Ibom governor, the lawmaker who interjected asked him “Who is Akpabio?”

“These are political pensioners,” Melaye said mockingly.

“You called Akpabio a political pensioner? Keyamo asked as the lawmaker restated his earlier comment saying the former governor was not just a political pensioner but “a big one.”

Another round of heated argument began with the legal practitioner claiming that the PDP candidate has conceded defeat by alleging that the APC were out to import fraudulent devices from China aimed at frustrating him in his stronghold during the election. The lawmaker rejected the defeat claim and sent the “defeat arrow” back to the sender.

The moderator hurriedly closed the noisy segment.

POLITICS TIMES recalls that the incumbent governor of Akwa Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel, was installed by Akpabio single-handedly. He has since turned against his successor and currently spearheading to install Nsima Ekere as the next governor.

Mr Ekere running on the platform of the APC had served Akpabio as running mate while the federal lawmaker held sway as governor.

Messrs Udom and Ekere are from Eket Senatorial District whose turn it is to serve out their remaining four years rotational power zoning.

Akpabio is expected by the leadership of the APC to deliver majority of votes coming from the state to Buhari having did so for former president Goodluck Jonathan, even though he lost his re-election bid to the incumbent president who has boasted that nobody can unseat him.
