Copa America: Messi Trophy Drought Continues As Argentina Fails Yet Again

Goals from Gabriel Jesus and Roberto Firmino saw Brazil to a 2-0 win over Argentina in the Copa America semifinals on Tuesday night as the host nation booked a spot in their first Copa final since 2007.

The result means that Argentina's Lionel Messi is still without a trophy during his international career with La Albiceleste despite having playing in three finals for his country.

Brazil, who have won every Copa America hosted on their home soil, scored first when Jesus turned home Firmino's low cross after some nice build-up play to make it 1- 0.

Sergio Aguero nearly got Argentina back on level terms on the half-hour, but his looping header from a Messi free kick hit off the crossbar after going over the outstretched arms of Alisson in the Brazil goal.

Down 1-0 at the start of the second half, Argentina were able to force the action a little more than in the first half and came closest to an equaliser on 66 minutes when Messi forced a fine save from Alisson.

Soon after, Brazil doubled their lead when Jesus set up Firmino for tap in after a mazy run from midfield in which he held off several defenders before squaring to the Liverpool striker.

Brazil now await the winner of Wednesday's other semifinal between Chile and Peru to determine their opponent for the final in Rio at the Maracana on July 7.

Fulani Vs Hausa: Why Kidnapping, Killings Won’t Stop In Zamfara — Miyetti Allah

$

Gusau – Rabiu Zuru, national president of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), said on Tuesday that the Fulani people had been pushed to the wall and that was why killings and kidnapping had remained pervasive in Zamfara State.

Addressing the state governor and stakeholders at a town hall meeting in Gusau, the state capital, the Fulani leader maintained that the Hausa community had offended the Fulani people beyond forgiveness.

According to him, the Hausa people would sell portions of lands to the Fulani people only to sell the land again to Hausa people thinking that the Fulani people are fools.

He said even if the Fulani people came back to claim the lands they bought, they would be asked to pay more before they could claim the lands.

The Fulani leader maintained that the Hausa people usually killed their people and stole their animals, insisting that attacks by the Fulani were reprisals.

“These are some of the main reasons why the Fulani people picked offence against the Hausa people,” he revealed.

Responding, the chairman, Zamfara State Council of Chiefs, Alhaji Attahiru Mohammed Ahmed, blamed the Yansakai group for killing innocent citizens, especially the Fulani people in the state.

According to him, the Yansakai group would just enter the market and start killing the Fulani people without reason.

The Emir equally blamed security operatives for arresting and killing innocent citizens of the state, saying it was not fair to blame insecurity in the state on the Fulani people only.

The Fulani leader said if the state government could stop the Hausa people from killing, harassing, and stealing the animals of Fulani people, the recurring killings and kidnappings would end in the state.

In his own reaction, the state governor, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, assured that his government would construct roads, hospitals, markets, grazing land, etc so that they could remain stationed in one place.

According to the governor, the state government would set up a high powered committee to find out how best to end the mayhem.

He gave the Fulani leaders a grace of one month to settle with their young ones who, he said, were responsible for the terror attacks and kidnappings in the state.

Our correspondent reports that immediately after the meeting, the whole Fulani people entered into a closed door session but the outcome was not yet known as at press time

Apapa Port, Others Shut As Maritime Workers Begin Strike

By Tola Adenubi -

Maritime workers under the aegis of the Maritine Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) on Wednesday made good their threat of protesting over their unpaid entitlements by the International Oil Companies (IOC) by grounding port operations.

As early as 6:00 a.m., the gates leading into Nigeria’s busiest port, Apapa and Tin-Can ports were shut and all vehicular movement restricted.
At about 8:45 a.m., the seaport workers softened their stance and allowed only private vehicles into the ports, barring all container trucks from entering into rhe ports.

Speaking to Tribune Online exclusively, President General of MWUN, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju explained that private vehicles were later allowed into the ports because of the nature of port business.

According to Adeyanju, “We decided to later allow private vehicles into the port because of the issues of emergency that could arise in the ports. People work inside the port and have offices there, so we have allowed them in except container carrying trucks or any other articulated vehicles.

“The same way we have locked ports in Lagos, we have also locked all other ports across the country. No business today except the IOC’s meet our demands”.

As at the time of filing in this report, the nation’s premier port and busiest port, Apapa port was under lock and key.

Earlier on Tuesday evening, shortly after meeting with all arms of the association including the Dockworkers branch and NPA branch, President General of the MWUN, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, addressing the press explained that the association has decided to downtool following the refusal of the International Oil Companies (IOC) to pay all outstanding stevedoring entitlements to it’s members.

According to Adeyanju, “some of the reason why we have decided to embark on strike includes: Non-payment of Government appointed stevedores/Dockworkers by the IOCs contravenes NIMASA Act 2007; Several efforts made for the IOCs to see reason including the stakeholders meeting organised by the NPA fell on deaf ears; Affected Dockworkers are suffering, some have even passed on prematurely due to economic hardship, whilst some have been made to become destitutes.

“As a responsible union, we cannot continue to fold our arms and watch our members die premature death because of the nonchalant attitude of the IOCs management towards the welfare of our members.

“In view of the foregoing, we gave a 14-day Ultimatum/Notice to the Federal Government, through the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation to prevail on the IOCs management to do the needful by paying our members.

“Ahead of the 14 days ultimatum/Notice, which elapsed on Friday, 28th June 2019, we issued a reminder letter dated 27th of June, 2019.

“However, despite a Reminder issued after the initial 14 days ultimatum had elapsed, the IOC’s were yet to comply to our demands as at the close of work on Tuesday 2nd of July, 2019. No evidence of payment was seen, thus forcing our members to withdraw their services in all the nations Seaports until all issues in contention are resolved.”

When contacted, the General Manager, Corporate and Strategic Communication of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Engr Adam Jatto said the agency is aware of the MWUN strike threat and are engaging them.

According to him, the authority is optimistic that the issues would be addressed and resolved amicably and the strike averted.

“We are actually on it, we are having discussion with them (the union) and unionism is about dialogue so we believe we will be able to strike a dialogue before the end of today.”

When told that the union complained about the uncompromising stance of the IOCs, Jatto said, “We are talking so we should expect something positive from it today.”

Bolaji Sule, deputy vice-chancellor, management services of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), has accused herdsmen of raiding farms within the university while threatening staff and students with weapons.

Speaking at a meeting with some security agencies in Kwara, Sule said the university had met its commitment towards the herdsmen but the issue of insecurity within its premises has continued.

He said the herdsmen posed serious threats to the university farms, dam site, hostels, academic environment and staff residence.

Sule accused some herdsmen of stealing farm products and building materials.

The DVC said the university authorities would not fail to take legal action against herdsmen and farmers trespassing on its land.

Sule said the institution had plans to use its land but could not do so due to security challenges, urging security personnel to be proactive.

Kameeludeen Azeez, an official of the faculty of agriculture, expressed worry over the “illegal activities of herdsmen” in the university in spite of efforts to appease them.

“It is rather so pathetic that the university has spent so much money on relocating the herders, given them all they requested and we are still encountering this,” he said.

He said the security agencies had been mandated to arrest trespassers in the university and to curb the threat, which some “unruly herdsmen posed to the institution”.

Yunus Alade-Saliu, a representative of the Department of State Services (DSS), assured the university of maximum security of staff and students in the area.

Alade-Saliu said illegal farming in the campus would no longer be treated with kid gloves.

La Liga to introduce first female referee next season

La Liga will be getting its first female referee next season, as confirmed by the Spanish Football Federation on Tuesday. This is coming 12 years after female referee, Marisa Villa, who was named in La Liga's list in 2007 did not pass the physical tests required to officiate a match.

32-year-old assistant referee, Guadalupe Porras Ayuso, who will now become the first woman ever to officiate in the league, has worked in Segunda, the men's second division, for two seasons and before that officiated for eight seasons in Segunda B, the third division in Spain.

"The assistant referee will be the first woman to debut in the top flight," the RFEF said in a statement.

It is also speculated that her elevation will give the much needed boost to for gender equality in Spanish football, following the year long unprecedented interest in the women's game.

#SenatorSexToy: Celebrities React To Nigerian Senator Assaulting A Woman

Banky W and other celebrities has reacted to video of a Nigerian Senator, Elisha Abbo slapping and beating up a woman at an intimacy gadget shop.

In a lengthy post he made on his official Instagram page, he hammered on Nigerians knowing who they elect as leaders.

Read it below..

I've been saying that we need to pay attention to who we let into our National Assembly. Now we have CCTV footage of a SITTING SENATOR physically assaulting a woman in an adult toy store in Abuja, IN THE PRESENCE OF A POLICE OFFICER. Her only "crime" was saying "Oga take it easy" when he got aggressive with her female store owner friend. For that, he slapped her multiple times, and then made his policemen arrest her. This is an absolute disgrace. Pls repost and share until our Police force agree to #ArrestSenatorElishaAbbo - he must face the full wrath of the law.
This is what happens when we don't pay attention to the people we let into our leadership roles.
This is what happens when we have a culture that subconsciously treats our women as second class citizens.
We have a lot to unlearn as a country.. about how we select/allow leaders AND about the way we treat our women. We must do better. We must be better.

Buhari Regime Looted N26.7 Trillion, $322 Million, N500 Billion, PDP Alleges

$

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) wants the National Assembly to investigate alleged treasury looting by the President Muhammadu Buhari since assuming office in 2015.

A statement by PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, said the Buhari regime looted N26.7 trillion, $322 million and N500 billion.

It urged the National Assembly to protect the interest of millions of suffering Nigerians by invoking its powers under sections 88 and 89 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to recover the funds alleged to have been looted.

See full text below.

The Peoples Democratic Party charges the National Assembly to, upon resumption, assert itself and accede to demands by Nigerians to investigate the widespread insecurity, economic depression, treasury looting, abuse of office and violations that stamped the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration since May 2015.

The PDP urges the federal legislature to protect the interest of millions of suffering Nigerians by invoking its powers under sections 88 and 89 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to recover the over N14 trillion stolen by government officials and leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the last four years.

The PDP holds that a legislative action has become imperative, as the Buhari-presidency has failed to give cogent explanation on the alleged looting of over N9 trillion through sleazy oil contracts as detailed in the leaked NNPC memo; a situation that directly points to officials’ culpability.

Nigerians also want the National Assembly to investigate the issues surrounding the reported stealing of N1.1 trillion worth of crude oil using 18 unregistered companies, as well as the alleged looting of over N2.6 trillion in shady oil subsidy regime.

The PDP urges the National Assembly to also investigate the alleged siphoning of $322m repatriated funds as well as the trillions of naira stolen under shady projects such as the ‘tradermoni’ project, among others.

The party notes that only recently, the wife of Mr. President, Mrs Aisha Buhari, raised the alarm that over N500 billion meant for poverty alleviation under the APC-led government did not get to the designated beneficiaries.

The PDP holds that the humongous looting under the Buhari-administration is directly responsible for the economic hardship Nigerians have been subjected to in the last four years.

Our party, therefore, urges the National Assembly to save the nation by recovering and channeling the stolen funds towards the welfare of Nigerians, while the culprits face the law.

Senate Won’t Be Rubber Stamp – Lawan

$

Contrary to the notion that the ninth Senate would be a rubber stamp, Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, has revealed that the ninth Assembly would scrutinise projects and contracts executed by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

In his welcome address, yesterday, when the Senate reconvened from its three-week break, he said the various standing committees, which were yet to be constituted, would monitor and supervise projects to be undertaken by the Executive arm of government.

“I intend to work closely with President Buhari in the interest of Nigeria without compromising the integrity of the National Assembly as an independent arm of government with oversight powers.

“As lawmakers, one of the powerful tools we have for our work is the power of oversight which is meant to enhance transparency and accountability.

“In exercising these powers, we will not only review, monitor and supervise projects being implemented by the executive, we will critically examine them vis-à-vis the cost and whether they align with our national aspirations.

“And we will follow the progress of these projects right from conception to when they are finally delivered to the people, but we will do so with every sense of responsibility.

“The system of checks and balances which we practice in Nigeria today was enshrined to safeguard the values of justice and the rule of law and deliver public good.

“Therefore, in a season when majority of Nigerians are more concerned with outcomes that reflect their concerns, the best way to serve that interest is through cooperation and collaboration.”

He said given the dwindling resources amidst rising population, the executive and legislature must work together to deliver essential services to Nigerians.

“So, in exercising our mandate as lawmakers, we must at all times, and in all circumstances, be guided by how our action will positively impact the greater majority of our people.

“Each of us, as lawmakers, must also resolve that the exchange of views, especially within this hallowed chambers, will be constructive and that we will respect one another.

“On my part, I pledge to lead in a bipartisan and unifying manner.’’

Lawan said the Senate would help the executive to reinvigorate the war against corruption with necessary legislations.

He announced a 13-member adhoc committee to fashion out a Legislative Agenda for the ninth Senate.

The Agenda is a policy document that contains the direction of the lawmaking body.

Lawan also said efforts on how best to tackle growing inequality, security challenge would be part of the legislative agenda.

The 13-member committee which has former governor of Kebbi State, Mohammed Adamu Aliero as chairman, has two weeks to submit its report.

He said the Senate would also consolidate on the oil sector reforms started by the eighth assembly.

Paul Mukendi, the renowned Congolese Pastor of Parole de Vie evangelical church in Quebec, Canada, has been found guilty of a 9-count charge of sexual assaults.

His victim, a 31-year-old woman who came into his care after his mother “gave her as an offering” to him when she was still an under-aged teenager, had accused him of sexually assaulting her for 14 years (2002 to 2016).

While Pastor Paul Mukendi claimed that the victim is “motivated by financial gain” and fabricated the entire story, she stood her ground as the trial began on June 4.

The Congolese Pastor was found guilty by the Jury, as other women came forward with their own claims about being sexually abused. Judge Jean-François Émond who denied his lawyer's request for him to be released pending his sentencing in September, opted for an immediate detention.
