Scales Remanded In Prison For N525 Million Internet Fraud (Photo)

The Uyo Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on July 2, 2019, arraigned a suspected serial fraudster, Scales Ishola, before Justice A.A. Okeke of the Federal High Court sitting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on a 45-count charge bordering on impersonation, obtaining by false pretence, conspiracy and fraud. .

One of the charges reads: “That you, Scales Olatunji Ishola ‘M’, Meraiyebu Charles ‘M’ (at large), Gabriel Adeyemi Olugbenga ‘M’ (at large), Ojomo Oluwatobi Ayodele ‘M’ (at large) and Adekola Oluwatoyin (at large), between January 2017 to October 2018, in Nigeria, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court with intent to defraud, did knowingly cause the loss of N525,172,580 (Five Hundred and Twenty-five Million, One Hundred and Seventy-two Thousand, Five Hundred and Eighty Naira) only, being property of the government and people of Norway and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 14 (2) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention etc) Act, 2015 and punishable under the same Section.” .

Scales, along with his accomplices who are currently at large, specialized in impersonating people and using their identity to defraud unsuspecting victims by sending various business emails with fake identities and duping them of several millions in various currencies. .

He pleaded “not guilty” to the charges. .

In view of his plea, counsel for the EFCC, Nwandu Ukoha, prayed the court to remand him in prison and fix a date for commencement of trial. .

The court had on July 1, 2019, granted an application made by the prosecution seeking for an interim forfeiture of properties belonging to them. The properties include, House No. 6, Road 2 Westend Estate, Ikota Lekki, Lagos State, and House No. 10, Donatus Odum Street, Ikate, Lagos State. .

The matter was thereafter adjourned to October 16, 2019, for hearing of bail application.

Former Manchester City captain Yaya Toure joins Chinese second-tier side Qingdao Huanghai


Three times Premier League champion Toure has been without a club since leaving Olympiacos in December, terminating his contract by mutual consent after a disappointing brief return to his former club.

Toure denied suggestions last month that he had subsequently retired as he is hungry to keep playing and insisted he still has 'a few more years' left.

Toure has also been the subject of interest from the Middle East but moving to China will allow him to resume playing straight away with the League One season underway and running until November.

Qingdao Huanghai is currently at the top of the Chinese second-tier.

Ex Aide Sues Former Minister Over Unpaid Salaries

Victor Oluwadamilere, a former aide of ex-minister of communication, Adebayo Shittu, has dragged him before the National Industrial Court, Abuja over alleged non-payment of salaries, Igbere TV reports.


Mr Oluwadamilere, who was Shittu’s special assistant on media, wants the court to compel the defendant to pay him N11.7 million accumulated as salaries for 28 months.


The plaintiff also wants the court to declare that the non-payment of his arrears of salaries was wrongful, illegal and unconstitutional.


Oluwadamilere also prays the court to order Shittu to pay him N50 million as aggravated and general damages among other claims after his appointment was terminated on March 14, 2018.


He alleged that the defendant only paid him three times out of the 28 months he worked for him.


He said Shittu paid him N500, 000 twice, N1.3 million once, totalling N2.3 million.


The former aide said the defendant put him on a monthly N100, 000 salary as against the approved Federal Government rate of N500, 000 for SA to Honourable Ministers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.


At the resumed hearing on Wednesday before Justice Benedict Kanyip, the plaintiff’s counsel, Adewale Lawal, informed the court that the matter was for mention.


Defence counsel, Oluwafemi Davies-Awe, confirmed that though he had been served with all relevant court processes, he needed time to respond to the claimants’ averments.


The judge adjourned the matter until November 13 for hearing.

Senator Abbo Lied About Being Physically Assaulted – Guardian

Senator Elisha Abbo, representing Adamawa North, lied about been physically assaulted while he was beating a woman at a intimacy gadget shop, Pleasure Chest, in Abuja, a source told The Guardian.

“Who could have attacked a senator in the company of a policeman,” the source who is a family relation to the shop owner, identified as Kemi, said in a brief chat with The Guardian said.

The source said the senator came with his entourage, while they were attending to them, “the lady with the senator started complaining that something was smelling awful in the shop and was trying to make a case out of it.”

“But the sales girl that was slapped was maintaining her stand that nothing is smelling and tried to make a joke it that maybe it was someone’s hair that was smelling,” the source said.

The senator confirmed that he is the man in the video assaulting a woman, but he insisted he was also assaulted too.

“Where I had to call an ambulance and police to come to the scene and it got out of hand I was also assaulted,” he told Channels Television Wednesday morning.

“We will soon release an official statement to the viral video which happened before I became a senator where my younger sister was beaten to a pulp in a shop and I was called upon there,” Abbo said.

The assault, which was first reported by Premium Times, has sparked a wave of indignation among politicians, celebrities, human rights activists and advocate groups.

Critics are calling for his prosecution and urging the Senate to also discipline him.

Meanwhile, the senator claimed that the roughly 10-minute video was incomplete, claiming he was at the shop because his sister had been assaulted there and that part was left out.

“They took her out to resuscitate her, the one standing with a cap is a doctor, the doctor had to come to give her life. My sister is not in the video, it was completely cropped out of it,” Abbo said.

He said he would be demanding the release of the full recording.

“This is a political season and now I am now a politician, before I was not a politician but now the reality of the fact is that I am now a politician and politicians are not people who are liked, they exhume things of 20 years and they hang it on their neck now,” he said.

“As I said before we will release a robust response to everything, and we will also ask for the entire video to be released since they have the video. We will seat and discuss the video. Just to be clear that video was taken long before now and it was released just as this point.”

How can someone who stays overseas re-activate his/her Naija Bank account.

- We have sent mail to the account, the requested for someone docs, we were provided.

- They requested we submit/courier the document to the bank branch or head quarter.

Apostle Suleman Reacts To Suspension Of Ruga Settlements For Herdsmen

The decision of the Federal Government to suspend the Rural Grazing Areas (RUGA) settlements for herdsmen has drawn reactions from some Nigerians.

The initiative, according the President Muhammadu Buhari, will address herders and farmers clashes across the nation.

State governors particularly from the southern part of the country rejected the plan. Some suggested that the initiative be established in the North while the South grow grass and send to the settlements in exchange of cows for consumption.

The government who said the initiative is optional for interested states has reportedly suspended the plan till further notice. The decision was reached after Mr Buhari met with some state governors on Wednesday.

Former Kaduna lawmaker, Shehu Sani, while reacting likened the move to that of a diffused landmine.

CBN Establishes Monthly Targets For MFB To Improve Financial Inclusion

As part of attempts to reach its financial inclusion target, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had anchored a goal of 64 new customers per branch every month for microfinance banks (MFBs) in the country.

In a report to all MFBs that was endorsed by the CBN Director, Other Financial Institutions Department, Mrs Tokunbo Martins, posted on the central bank’s website, each branch of MFBs in the country was required to gather 774 new accounts annually.

It stated that in a bid to mobilise stakeholders on the Revised National Financial Inclusion Strategy (NFIS 2.0) and accelerate progress towards the achievement of the target, the CBN had held a stakeholders‘ forum for all financial service providers in the six geopolitical zones in the first and second quarters of 20l9 which was attended by representatives of MFBs.

“The objective of the Forum was to expose stakeholders to the detailed provisions of the Revised Strategy (NFIS 2.0) and their expected roles/responsibilities in the financial inclusion agenda.

“One of the major resolutions reached athletic the event was the setting of a target for each branch of a microfinance bank to acquire 64 new customers per month. This translates to 774 new bank accounts (measured by new BVN registration) per branch per year.

“Given the urgency of this task, it is important to cascade the target to your branches for their information Ind implementation.”

The new accounts must be for individuals who did not previously have a bank account.
The letter added: “All MFBs are hereby requested to implement the above resolution and disseminate same to all their branches (where applicable) to ensure concerted efforts towards achieving the overarching target of 80 per cent financial inclusion by the year 2020.”

Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp have been hit with another outage that’s stopping users from logging in, viewing or posting pictures.

According to report sighted by MANDY NEWS on Independent outage monitor Downdetector has registered over 2,100 reports at one time from users insisting Instagram is not working as normal.

Some are unable to access their accounts at all.

It appears to be mostly affecting the UK, northern Europe, the east coast of the US and parts of South America. So, yeah, it’s a global thing.

Many Websites, Services Went Offline, As Cloudflare Servers Develop Problem

For about an hour Internet users faced problems accessing many websites because of a problem with Cloudflare.

The company provides internet security and other services meant to help online businesses operate smoothly.

BBC reports that many members of the public had reported seeing “502 errors” displayed in their browsers when they tried to visit its clients.

The service has more than 16 million customers ranging from the chat service Discord to the dating site OKCupid.

The problem had now been resolved although some of its analytics tools were still facing disruption, Cloudflare said.

Among the casualties was Downdetector, a popular site used to monitor disruption.

Also, CoinDesk a news site specialising in cryptocurrencies was one of those affected. It said that it had received bad data from its providers as a consequence, which resulted in it misreporting prices.

“Calm down everyone, Bitcoin is not $26,” it tweeted before adding that it had now resolved the issue.

The plane-tracking service Flightradar24, social media statistics service Social Blade and vineyard monitoring system Vinelytics were among others to confirm they had been affected.

In the verge for the Network error, a 502 error code signifies that an internet server has received a invalid response from another server it is trying to contact.

Report says that there has been speculation that San Francisco-based Cloudflare had suffered a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack in which it had been flooded with traffic.

But it has denied this was the case and has blamed the incident instead on a “bad software” update that had been “rolled back”.

“This was not an attack (as some have speculated) and we are incredibly sorry that this incident occurred,” blogged John Graham-Cumming, the firm’s chief technology officer.

“Internal teams are meeting as I write performing a full post-mortem to understand how this occurred and how we prevent this from ever occurring again.”

The Register reported that the firm also experienced issues last week, although that time it appears that the telecoms network Verizon was at fault.

He made the apology at a press conference at the PDP headquarters in Abuja.

The Senator who was closed to tears at the briefing asked for forgiveness, saying it is not in his character to assault women.
