Imo Governorship: Supreme Court Quashes Okorocha’s Son-In-Law, Nwosu’s Candidature

Imo gov’ship polls: Supreme Court quashes Uche Nwosu’s Candidature.

The Supreme Court has said that the governorship candidate of Action Alliance (AA) in the 2019 gubernatorial election in Imo State, Ugwumba Uche Nwosu, was not qualified to vie for the election as he doubled as both the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and that of AA. In a lead judgment read by Justice Amina Augie, the apex court held that by virtue of double candidature, Nwosu ab intio was not qualified to vie for the office. Nwosu had won the nomination to contest under APC, the internal wrangling within the ruling party made it impossible for him to be presented as the party’s candidate, which necessitated his defection to AA at the dying minute.

The judgment was sequel to a suit by the Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere led Action Peoples Party, (APP). The judgment was concurred by the Presiding Justice RhodesVivour, Justices Mary Peter- Odili, and Ejimbi Eko and C.C Nweze.

The Supreme Court held that by virtue of Uche Nwosu’s double candidature and in line with the clear provisions of the Electoral Act, he was bound to be disqualified from the election and affirmed the judgments of the High Court and the Court of Appeal. Reacting to the judgment, the Election Petition Appeal against the election of Governor Emeka Ihedioha also before the apex court by Uche Nwosu was dead and buried as Uche Nwosu was not a validly nominated candidate for the election and therefore lacks the locus to file a petition before the Governorship Election Tribunal.

Ugochinyere said, “The implication of today’s Supreme Court judgment that quashed Uche Nwosu Candidature means that Uche Nwosu/AA Party never had any governorship candidate in Imo 2019 guber election and like the Supreme Court decided in Zamfara all the votes cast for Uche Nwosu/AA was invalid and for you to calculate whether Gov. Ihedioha met two third you have to remove Uche Nwosu/AA void votes and you will see that Ihedioha crossed the constitutional threshold without any doubt.

A Facebook user, Ukan Kurugh Ukan, has accused a married man with three kids of raping his 21-year-old sales girl after he invited her to bring the sales book for stock checking before he travels for Christmas.

Ukan Kurugh Ukan shared graphic photos of the blood stained pant of the deflowered sales girl allegedly raped by the boss.

He wrote:

I AM ABOUT TO NAME AND SHAME ANOTHER RAPIST.

These are blood stained pictures of a 21yr old girl's pant, wrapper, and gown who was raped last night by her own boss, when he asked her to come give him sales book to check the stock before he travels for the Christmas.

The struggle began and he overpowered the young girl, broke her virginity and caused much bruises.

FIDA, Josephine Haba, Victoria Egwor Daaor and I are on the case, but I want the whole world to know that this little girl must get justice, as the rapist still came to the hospital where she was taken to, to threaten her and also seized her phone.

We are patiently waiting for the Doctor's report and it would interest us all to know that she also did not take her bath after the sad incidence so the evidence are good enough everywhere.
We are calling on all relevant authorities to come to the aid of this girl because the family needs us more now than ever. The police are on it but her mum is expressing doubt over the matter with the kind of questions they were asking the young girl yesterday.

They family wants the case to be moved to the Police Head Quarters Immediately for further investigation.

I shall name and shame this married man of three(3) little kids (2boys and a girl) later in the evening today.

A 36-year old housewife, Mrs. Florence Anyasi, was taken aback and traumatized after she woke up at night and caught her husband, Stanley, having sex with their 13-year old house maid in Lagos.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the mother of three, has approached the Customary Court in Igando, Lagos State, to dissolve her 10-year old marriage after the dastardly act in their home.

She also told the Court that her husband, Mr. Stanley, was a chronic womanizer. She narrated that apart from numerous cases of her husband chasing women around, her husband used to sneak into their house maid’s room at night to sleep with her.

“I have caught him severally on my maid’s bed sexually assaulting her. A neighbour once approached me and told me to warn my husband to desist from asking her daughter to have a love affair with him. I once caught him sucking the breasts of my niece, who is a minor and he is also fond of wooing my friends” she said.

An embittered Mrs. Anyasi also accused her husband, Stanley, of threatening her life. She also accused the him of always telling her that he will kill her and that he had once succeeded in poisoning her through food.

“He bought food for me and after eating the food, I started having serious pain and vomiting. I was rushed to the hospital by my neighbours and when I was diagnosed by the doctors, it was detected that the food I ate had been poisoned” she claimed.

The petitioner also said that her husband had equally turned her into a punching bag, beating her at the slightest provocation, and had been calling her a thief and a prostitute in public. She added that her husband is irresponsible and unable to provide food for the family or pay the children’s school fees. She therefore urged the Court to dissolve her marriage with Stanley.
The President of the Court, Mr. Adeniyi Koledoye, further adjourned the matter for continuation of hearing when Stanley was expected to open his defence.

CJN: ‘Sharia Law Is Not Islamisation Of Nigeria’ - Islamic Scholars

$

0
Concerned Islamic scholars across the country have thrown their weights behind the suggestions of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Muhammad Tanko, calling for the improvement of the status of the Shari’ah law in Nigeria through the amendment of the relevant sections of the constitution.

The Muslim leaders berated the outcry that followed the suggestion and emphasised for the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) that Sharia law does not necessarily mean Islamisation of Nigeria, as wrongly insinuated.

Former Executive Secretary, Muslim Ummah of southwest Nigeria (MUSWEN) and Retired Prof. of Islamic Studies, University of Ibadan, Prof. Dawud Noibi, said: “Section 38 of the 1999 Constitution as ammended guarantees freedom of religion both in belief and in practice. The whole life of a Muslim is governed by the laws of his religion. Therefore, it is the duty of the nation to provide for a judicial system whereby the relevant laws are interpreted correctly and disputes among adherents arising from such laws are resolved peacefully,”

Besides, he noted that, “there are provisions in the constitution for the establishment of Shari’ah courts anywhere this is required in the country to cater to the needs of Muslim citizens. If HURIWA and CAN are not asking that these provisions be expunged from the constitution, why do they want to crucify the CJN for calling for the improvement of the Shari’ah as other laws in force in the country are open to improvement?

“In what way is the improvement of the application of the Shari’ah for Muslims in Nigeria offensive to non-Muslims? And in what way does it constitute a violation of the provision of Section 10 of the constitution which prohibits the adoption of a state religion by the State?

“Let them bear in mind that Muslims are aware of the fact the Saturday- Sunday weekend imposed on all of us by our Christian colonizers satisfies the religious needs of only Nigerian Christian’s. Yet, Muslims are not complaining. So, let non-Muslim citizens of Nigerian cultivate the spirit of “Live and let live”.

He however urged the National Assembly to take quick action on the suggestion to strengthen Sharia law and do the needful.

Director, MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola, supported the CJN, noting that the current constitution is a child of British colonial Christianisation of the country, which has failed to take into consideration the multi-religious.

He said: “The system we run in this country is not only alien to Muslim culture, it has marginalised the Muslim population. Our democracy is deceptive in as much as Muslims who form the largest segment of the population are not integrated into the system. Participatory democracy is the global best practice. But not in Nigeria.

“Nigeria’s democracy excludes the Muslims. Our weekends shut Muslims out. It is the entire monopoly of Christians. Saturday and Sunday are free but Friday is not. The Muslim girl-child goes to school with tears in her eyes because she must not enter the school with hijab on her head. There is no single Shariah Appeal Court in the entire South West and Muslims in that sub-region are subjected to Christian common law in all civil matters. Muslim marriages conducted inside mosques are not recognised but those held in churches are sacrosanct. This democracy is fraudulent.

“Christian women enjoy the monopoly of recruitment into the army, navy, police, civil defence, traffic wardens, immigrations, customs, etc but Muslim women cannot because those uniformed agencies will not recruit users of hijab. Yet Muslim police women and soldiers use hijab in Britain, United States, Ireland, etc. Female Muslim graduates therefore remain jobless and impoverished while their Christian counterparts smile to the banks.

“MURIC therefore embraces the CJN’s idea of the need for constitutional amendment. It is even belated. It is part of restructuring. We hope the restructuring camp will welcome the CJN’s idea because it is not going to be about Muslim demands alone but a comprehensive one. We call for objectivity in this matter. Those who always oppose anything which is likely to benefit Muslims are urged to consider this initiative with an open mind. Constitutional amendment has all the potentials to usher in peace and tranquillity if we approach it with sincerity,” he stated.

'Charcoal Anthrax' Disease Hits Niger Republic, Nigeria Customs Takes Precaution

$

By Ayodamola Owoseye

The Nigeria Customs Service has directed its officials to take precautionary measure at land borders to prevent importation of "charcoal anthrax" diseases into the country.

The deputy comptroller -general (E, I&I) of the agency, V.D Dimka, gave this directive in a memo last week.

This was as against the backdrop of a reported outbreak of the disease in the neighbouring Niger Republic from where sheep and cattle are imported to Nigeria.

According to the directive, the custom headquarters received a report that the Nigerien Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock had notified the World Organisation for Animals Health (WOAH) of an outbreak of charcoal anthrax diseases, the Bacterium Bacillus Anthracis variant, in sheep and cattle in Niger.

"Given the supply of cattle and sheep from Niger to Nigeria, the Comptroller-General, Customs (CGC) has directed on the urgent need to place additional precautionary measure to prevent the spread of the disease into Nigeria through our land borders," the memo read.

The disease was first reported in the Niger Republic on September 23 where over 100 cattle have been infected and 22 death recorded.

The infectious disease can survive in the soil for several years before being ingested by grazing animals.

It can also be transmitted to humans through direct or indirect contact with infected animals, through occupational exposure or contaminated animal products.

No case in Nigeria

But the Chief Veterinary officer of Nigeria, Olaniyan Alabi, told PREMIUM TIMES that there has been no case of charcoal anthrax diseases in the country.

Mr Alabi said the Nigerian customs had misrepresented the information in the circular to its officials.

He said the title of the circular, "Re: Outbreak of charcoal anthrax in sheep and cattle in Republic of Nigeria", is misleading because there has been no case of the disease reported in the country.

Mr Alabi said charcoal anthrax, which is common in sheep and cattle, is a deadly disease and Nigerians would have been alerted if the disease was found in the country.

He, however, said his department in November advised all states in the country, especially those at the border areas, to be at alert and look out for the possibility of cases because of the report of the disease in Niger.

He said though no case has been reported in the country so far, officials in the agricultural agency are already on alert.

He said people can only detect if an animal is sick through testing, not just by looking at the animal.

"As such we have directed our officials to be on the lookout and take samples of animals which they suspect to be sick to the laboratories for proper diagnosis," he said.

What is anthrax?

Anthrax is a bacterial infection. Those at high risk of contracting the disease are people who work with animals, animals products, travellers, and military personnel.

The disease can occur in four forms; skin, lungs, intestine and injection.

Symptoms include blister on the skin, fever, chest pains and breathless in lungs infection, while for intestine infection can cause diarrhoea, which might contain blood; nausea, vomiting and stomach ache.

The injection form presents with fever and abscess at the injection site.

The symptoms begin between day one of exposure to two months after the infection.

The condemnable incident of the rape of a 21 year old in Makurdi last night has filled a vast majority of Benue people and online readers with anger and why I disclosed the incident earlier today, I promised to, by evening reveal the identity of the perpetrator.

The perpetrator who runs a Bar at David Mark Bypass is married with kids and one wonders why he would engage in such a morally reprehensible behavior.

The victim, aged 21(a virgin) who is his staff was forcefully deflowered by him yesterday when she came to present him with the records book. As earlier informed FIDA, Mrs. Josephine Haba, Mrs Victoria Egwor Daaor , Myself and a few others are on the case to ensure justice.

The 2010s have been a great decade for Nigerian television shows. From the scripting to the quality of production, Nigerian television has come a long way since the days of New Masquerade.

As we bid farewell to the decade that gave us unforgettable characters like Achelonu and Spiff, we shed the spotlight on Nigerian television shows that not only delivered on quality but also had social media buzzing.

Here are five series that held us spellbound this decade and are all currently available for streaming on Showmax.

1. Ajoche

Fondly dubbed Nigeria’s Game of Thrones by fans of the show, Ajoche aired on Africa Magic Showcase from April 2018 to May 2019.

Ajoche is set in 1918 when the Idoma emerged from the middle belt of Nigeria at a time when culture and tradition were celebrated. The hit show is a tale of war and duty, revenge and honour, love and lust as the people of Ocholuje embrace their destiny, uncovering some bitter truths and harsh realities as they fight for survival.

Ajoche earned a City People Movie Award nomination for Best TV Series of the Year (English) and frequently made it to the top of Twitter in Nigeria while it aired.

Produced by James Omokwe, the show stars the likes of Hilda Dokubo, Femi Branch, William Benson, Lota Chukwu, Akah Nani, Efa Iwara,Tokunbo Idowu (T-Boss), Lilian Afegbai and Big Brother alumni Bassey Ekpenyong.

2. Battleground

Battleground is a family drama series centred around the Badmus’, a wealthy Nigerian family, and the often questionable lengths its patriarch goes to hold on to power, wealth and even family.

The show gave us one of the most unforgettable moments in Nigerian television history - Adaora flogging Onajite - and had social media buzzing while it aired. From the plot to the acting and even costumes, Battleground held its audience spellbound from start to finish.

It even featured a crossover episode with another Africa Magic series, Hush, reminiscent of the How To Get Away With Murder/Scandal crossover.
The show stars Gbenga Titiloye, Shaffy Bello, Kunle Coker, Joke Silva, Okey Uzoeshi, Ini Dima-Okojie, Ozzy Agu, and Yinka Davies.

3. Hush

Hush marked the return of Nollywood legend Richard Mofe-Damijo to the small screen, thrilling viewers with the delivery of drama and suspense.

Fashion, politics and power is the central theme of the show. A governorship aspirant’s noble mission is tainted by the ambitions of an exclusive men’s club and her personal life.

The show earned a Best Drama nomination in the 2017 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA) and stars Thelma Okoduwa, Mawuli Gavor, Ade Laoye, Chris Okagbue and Baaj Adebule, amongst others.

In the wake of the show’s finale, fans applauded the ending, describing it on social media as one of the best Nigerian television shows ever written.

4. The Johnsons

The Johnsons chronicles the lives of an average Nigerian family and the everyday challenges they navigate, told from the perspective of their special 15-year old son, Efe Johnson.

Showing since 2014 on Africa Magic, the show quickly became a household name due to the antics of the characters. The Johnsons has earned several awards, including the 2017 City People Movie Award for Best TV Series of the Year (English) and 2017 AMVCA for Best Comedy.

The Johnsons stars Charles Inojie, Chinedu Ihedieze, Ada Ameh, and Olumide Owuru, among others.

5. Hustle

Zambian President Wants U.S. Ambassador Out Of The Country For Defending Gay Couple

Zambian President Edgar Lungu wants the U.S. ambassador to leave the country after the diplomat criticized the African state for sentencing a gay couple to 15 years behind bars for having a consensual relationship.

“We have complained officially to the American government, and we are waiting for their response because we don’t want such people in our midst,” Lungu said Sunday in comments broadcast on state-owned ZNBC TV. “We want him gone.”

U.S. Ambassador Daniel Foote said last month that he was “personally horrified” after the high court sentenced the two men and called on the government to reconsider laws that punish minority groups. The move was particularly disturbing as “government officials can steal millions of public dollars without prosecution,” Foote said.

The U.S. provides $500 million in aid to Zambia yearly, according to Foote.

“We are saying no to homosexuality,” Lungu said in comments broadcast by Sky News earlier this month. “When you are tying it to aid, if that is how you are going to bring your aid, then I’m afraid the west can leave us alone in our poverty. And we’ll continue scrounging and struggling.”

The State Department didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
