Under Fire After Ban On Keke & Okada, Lagos Government Promises Alternative

The Lagos State Government has promised to provide alternative means of transportation for Lagosians in the wake of its ban on commercial motorcyclists and tricyclists in certain areas of the metropolis.

It also praised ‘keke’ and ‘okada’ riders for complying with their restriction from six LGAs, major highways and bridges.

The enforcement by the State Security Council began on Saturday.

The ban has been widely condemned by residents as the government made no alternative arrangements for commuters, leaving many trekking and struggling to find means of reaching their destinations.

The state said the ban, which is being enforced in 15 local government areas and local council development areas across the state, became necessary due to the casualty figures resulting from their operations.

In a statement released on the official Twitter page of Lagos State Government Sunday evening, the government said the level of compliance was over 90 per cent. “In fact, some of the ride hailing companies directed their riders to obey the directive. This is commendable,” it said.

According to the statement, “the high level of compliance has shown that Lagosians agree with the government on the need to stop the danger that commercial motorcycles and tricycles have become – a big threat to safety of lives and security of our people.

“The little discomfort experienced by commuters on some routes due to the absence of motorcycles and tricycles is noted. This will not last as alternatives are being rolled out.”

Alternative

It said a fleet of 65 buses will join the others on some major routes as from Monday February 3, 2020. “No less than 550 more buses are being expected. Besides, 14 ferries will be commissioned on Tuesday.”

It also said “this will further open up the waterways, reduce travel time on various routes and provide safe, dependable and comfortable alternatives for commuters.

“The government is not unaware that enforcing this directive may lead to some job losses. The Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, plans to announce some measures to tackle the likely effects of the order.

“Besides the programmes of various agencies, such as the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF), Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Office of Civic Engagement, Lagos State Parks and Gardens and others.”

Warning

The government warned those who are planning to unleash violence on the state because of the ongoing enforcement to have a change of heart.

“Lagosians are peace loving and law abiding people, who will not embrace any disruption of their legal activities by failed politicians hiding under the evil of unwholesome activism.

“The law enforcement agents have been directed to ensure that nobody takes the law into his hands. The government places a very high premium on law and order in the interest of all Lagosians.

“It will not fail to act when peace is threatened.”

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila on Monday said President Muhammadu Buhari is concerned about the security situation in the country.

The two presiding officers of the National Assembly disclosed this while fielding questions from journalists at the State House, Abuja, on the outcome of the meeting with President Buhari.

Gbajabiamila said the leadership of National Assembly told Mr President of the need to increase funding of the Nigeria Police Force and recruit more personnel to tackle the current challenges.

He said the lower chamber had constituted a committee involving the two arms of government and the party to periodically review the issue of security across the country.

He downplayed the resolution of the House calling for the resignation of Service Chiefs over insecurity since the Inspector General of Police was responsible for internal security of the country.

The Senate President, while speaking, said the recent security challenges facing the country required close collaboration.

THE organized labour in Anambra State on Monday gave the state government a 14- day ultimatum to implement the new minimum wage or be prepared to face industrial action.

At an emergency meeting of the state executive council of the organized labour in Awka, the unionists expressed dissatisfaction with the implementation of the January 24 agreement with the government on the issue.

The state chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC), Jerry Nnubia said what is being implemented fell short of what the labour negotiated with the government.

He said: “The SEC decided to meet on the issue and took the necessary decision. We are dissatisfied and we frown at the decision of the government to renege on the agreement.

“We hereby give the government a 14- day ultimatum from today, after which the organized labour would not guarantee industrial harmony in the state.

“The state government did not follow the agreed chart with the organized labour in the state and as far as we are concerned, the difference we saw in the salaries of workers in January was just a bonus which government decided to give to workers.”

BIRTH AND CHILDHOOD

Ishaq Akintola was born in Obaloran Compound, Ile-Ife. Ishaq’s mother died when he was just three years old. He finished the Qur’an at the early age of nine years. He also learnt more Arabic under Ustadh Abdul Rauf (Ketefe) at Ojoyin, Ile-Ife.

EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL CAREER

He was soon overtaken by his childhood love for Islamic education and he left his hometown, Ile-Ife, for the famous Ma’had Arabic Institute of Nigeria in Ibadan.
His university education began with a Certificate course in Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Ibadan where he excelled and got a Distinction plus the Arab League Prize. In 1975 he traveled to Cairo, Egypt, where he studied Simultaneous Translation (Arabic/English/French) at the Al-Azhar University which is the first university in the world. . . sends nudes while hubby sleeps

A HARARE woman has left her matrimonial home in shame after the alleged leakage of her love affairs with 16 men.

Munashe Charlene Ncube, 24, of Damofalls allegedly bedded the 16 men and her husband to make them 17. She also spent three days with a boyfriend when her husband was out on duty during Christmas holiday.

Ncube has since gone into hiding after jumping over the precast wall after her husband Erkridice Makomo leaked chats revealing unprotected sexcapades, sleep overs and nude images sent to boyfriends.

H-Metro is in possession of pictures of the alleged boyfriends and other graphic photos of the lady.

Makomo is bitter, from information in the chats, that Ncube had been denying him conjugal rights saying she had stomach cramps and was even spoiling her boyfriends with goodies as well as fuel for their meets.

Makomo says he has been insulted over the phone by some boyfriends after he took his wife’s phone. They have been married for the past four years.

“I got the shock of my life to see chats of over 16 boyfriends some of which are hidden in GB WhatsApp version.

“I also found out that in December last year she went to sleep at one of the boyfriends named Kudakwashe Masoka’s place during the Christmas period while I was out working for three days.

“She no longer wanted to have sex with me and she gave all sorts of silly excuses achiti ane mudumbu.

Makomo said Ncube stole his US$40 and he suspected from the chats that she is now staying with Kudakwashe.

He said he took his estranged wife Munashe to a nursing school and recently bought a brand new stove and a refrigerator worth ZW$14900 for their household. He would also give her money which she spent on boyfriends buying them fuel.

Another alleged boyfriend named Simbarashe called on Munashe’s mobile phone which is in possession of the husband and hurled insults at Makomo.

Makomo further explained his ordeal saying they had not sired a child for the four years they have lived together with his wife.

“I would come back after two days and find dirty dishes and when I ask her she would say siyanai ne zvinhu zvemu kitchen.

“There is a Doctor in Norton named Obed whom she is also flirting with and this guy had been asking for sex from my wife,” he said showing this publication the chats.

Makomo and his uncle have since created a WhatsApp group including the 16 boyfriends to shame his wife and the boyfriends have been sharing moments they had with Munashe.

H-Metro caught up with one of the boyfriends in Norton, Ranganai Forichi who said he met Munashe in September last year.

Another alleged boyfriend Floyd, according to the chats, refused to speak saying he was busy at work while one Tawanda Mapako said Munashe was just a friend.

“I saw her last week in Damofalls and we have known each other since high school in Mabvuku.

“She is my friend’s girlfriend not mine,” said Tawanda.

Other alleged boyfriends’ mobile phones went unanswered when H-Metro tried to reach out and the other names leaked include Kudakwashe, Cain, Rajin, Kudakwashe, Obed and one Alton who denied the allegations despite the chats suggesting a love affair.

Some of the leaked chats revealed to H-Metro with Munashe begging for unprotected sex and suggesting she could be pregnant with Kudakwashe’s baby.

On a regular day, i take a bus for 100Naira or 150Naira but on getting to the bustop today, it was an eyesore and i eventually paid 500Naira to get to Eko Hotel. I honestly hope something is done soon to help the masses. A BRT Bus came and upon seeing the kind of crowd at the bustsop, he decided to help and asked us to come in. At the point of payment, the other oficials, said the ticket available was for 250Naira and people began to move backwards because we were already used to paying 100Naira.

He said he only had a ticket for Ajah and he was just going to follow Eko Hotel and drop us off. People couldn't pay and we watched an empty Bus leave the terminal.
Please help us provide BRT busses that will drop us off at Eko Hotel with a ticket we can afford..Help us please cause i'm not sure we can survive this.

Kola Ologbondiyan: APC’s Claim On Insecurity Misleading, Propaganda

$

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said claims by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), that President Muhammadu Buhari is winning the war against insecurity is misleading and mere propaganda. The APC had in a statement on Monday, faulted criticisms directed against the President, saying it was confident President Muhammadu Buhari would end insecurity in the country.

But the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, said on Monday night that the ruling party’s statement was an attempt to allegedly deny the reality on ground. “The APC are just misleading Nigerians and doing mere propaganda with their incredible claims. What is happening today is the worst we have ever experienced as a country.

“Nigerians are being abducted and beheaded in their own country. For us, this is the worst it can be. We have never had it this bad. “So, when they say the President is winning the war against insecurity, we would like them to provide an evidence-based response devoid of falsehood and propaganda.

“It will interest Nigerians to know that when PDP handed over power to the APC in 2015, no local government was under the control of Boko Haram. “Our government succeeded in chasing the terrorists to the fringes of Sambisa forest and was on the verge of pushing them out completely when we handed over.

“Today, every part of the country is under threat of men who behead for fun; a novelty hitherto unheard of in our country. So if they say they are winning the war, help us ask them this simple question: which war?” he said.

Oyo LG Crisis: Pay Off Elected Chairmen Or Allow Them Serve Their Tenure - Falana

$

0
Human Rights Lawyer, Femi Falana waded into the local government crisis in Oyo State, on Monday, urging Governor Seyi Makinde to either allow the sacked elected Chairmen to serve out their tenure or pay them off if they won’t be allowed to complete their tenure.

Falana who held that caretaker chairmen were unknown to the nation’s constitution, charged Makinde to rather speed up the process of conducting a local government election in the state.

These were some of Falana’s remarks during the maiden edition of Emeritus Professor Muyiwa Awe Annual Memorial Lecture, held at the University of Ibadan, on Monday.

Responding to journalists on way out of the local government crisis in Oyo State, Falana said: “The governor will have to speed up election of Local Government officials because the caretaker committees are unknown to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

“Once the Local Government chairmen have been elected, they have to serve their tenure and if at all you are not allowing them to finish their tenure, you will have to pay them. This is the position of the law.”

Meanwhile, Attorney General of Oyo State, Professor Oyelowo Oyewo, on Monday, said the return to office of the sacked Chairmen of local government and local council development areas in the state will be guaranteed by a court order to that effect.

This is as Oyelowo, who spoke on a Channels Television programme, noted that there was no particular court case instituted against the appointment of caretaker chairmen by the Governor Seyi Makinde led government.

Describing the local government crisis in the state as a combination of politics and legality, Oyewo, however, said it looked forward to the court rulings on its injunction filed against the Attorney General of the Federation and five others and its appeal against a court judgment obtained by the sacked Chairmen against Oyo State governor.

He said the state government will abide by a court judgment that declares its appointment of caretaker Chairmen as null and void and calls for a return to the status quo.

Oyewo, however, said the state government was keen to conduct local government elections as soon as the ongoing court cases are dispensed with.

“The bottom line is that the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde is a rule of law administration. If a judgment comes out of the court directing that our action is null and void, go back to the status quo, that will be done.

“Even with the action to appoint caretaker chairmen taken by the government, there is no instituted action against the action of the governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, till I speak.

“What everybody wants is for the state to be able to resolve this matter, both in terms of the legality and political process. Within a short time from now, we hope to be able to conduct elections and have the administration of local governments properly running as it is required,” Oyewo said.

Speaking further, Oyewo said the Supreme court judgment being alluded to by the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, in a letter to the state government, was not precisely to be enforced upon Oyo State.

Mentioning that there were some other states running local government using caretaker committees, he accused Malami of being partisan by writing the Inspector General of Police to enforce the judgment in Oyo State.

He described Malami’s involvement as subjudice, noting that the state government was in court to challenge the judgment obtained by the sacked Chairmen against the Oyo State governor.

“The Attorney General may have his reasons to have written that letter addressed to the Oyo state Attorney General but they are not based on the constitution and not based on law. They are so partisan.

“You don’t write a letter to the Chairman of a party in a state directing the governor. We run a federal government and this has been settled by the Supreme Court and sorted during the regime of President Olusegun Obasanjo when there was a dispute of creation of local government and the government withheld.

“The Supreme Court said if you have such issues, you go to court and that is what we have done. We have gone to court.

“The state government went to court because, with respect to the local government, we believe that the AGF was not properly briefed.

“If he were aware that the matter was subjudice, then he will not take such wanton, liberal use of his powers. His powers are guided by law, the constitution of the land, and as interpreted by the courts,” Oyewo said.

Posting Policemen Outside State Of Origin Is Unproductive - Femi Falana

Human rights lawyer , Mr . Femi Falana ( SAN) , says the practice of posting policemen outside their states of origin is unproductive.
Falana said every police officer should operate in their community, speak the local language and mix freely with the people .
The activist said this at the Maiden Memorial Public Lecture in memory of Late Professor Olumuyiwa Awe in Ibadan , according to a statement on Monday .
The senior advocate said , “ The success of the civilian Joint Task Force in the counter -insurgency operations in Borno state has proved that the best way to police a country is to recruit , train and equip young men and women to operate in their own communities .
“ The colonial practice of posting police personnel to operate outside their states of origin was meant to suppress and intimidate colonial subjects by strangers . It is a practice which has become counter-productive in a post- colonial state . Every police officer should operate in their community, speak the local language and mix freely with the people .”
Falana said state police remained the best option as regards tackling insecurity in the country.
He noted that the fears expressed by a cross -section of Nigerians that state governments could abuse state police were not misplaced .
The senior advocate , however, stated that there was a way of insulating state police from arbitrary abuse.
The activist stated , “ To avoid a situation whereby abuse of police powers is decentralised any security service established by state governments should be democratically controlled .
“ The service will be founded by the state governments and superintended by an independent state police council of five members. The members of the council should be accredited representatives of the state government , labour, women, youths and the business community.
“ The service will police the state and see to the enforcement of all the laws enacted by the House of Assembly. ”
Falana said the All Progressives Congress had also expressed support for state police in the past.
He said state police would be a positive step in the task to enthrone federalism.

“ In the manifesto of the APC , it is expressly stated that there shall be power devolution from the centre to the other federating units . The APC Committee on federalism headed by Governor Nasir El - Rufai recommended the establishment of state police .
“ Apparently , President Muhammadu Buhari is not totally opposed to state police but he has his reservation. Hence, he has expressed the fear that a number of state governments might endanger national security if state security operatives are owed arrears of salaries like workers , ” Falana said .
He argued that the 36 governors , who are all members of the Nigeria Police Council, had failed to use their numerical strength to insist that the NPC be allowed to discharge its constitutional duties .
Falana said for reasons best known to the state governors , the President had been allowed to exercise the powers of the NPC with respect to the appointment and removal of the IGP and the general supervision of the NPF .
“ The council has not adduced any reason to justify its failure to hold regular meetings and take decisions in line with the provisions of Section 159 of the constitution, ” Falana said .

The Chairman of the South-West Governors Forum, Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN, will meet with the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd,), to discuss the details of the Operation
Amotekun security initiative being championed by South-West Governors.
A reliable presidency source on Monday said the governor had secured an appointment to meet with the President to explain the issue to him.
The source said, “The governor has an appointment to meet with Mr President on the Amotekun issue tomorrow (Tuesday).”
However, the Ondo State Commissioner for Information, Mr Donald Ojogo, said, “I am hearing this from you. I just left a meeting with my governor and there was nothing like that. So, I don’t know where this is coming from.”
Recall that the Ondo State governor, had on Friday, January 24, told reporters in Abuja that he and his colleagues would meet with the President to explain the Amotekun to him.

This followed the pronouncement by the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Abubakar Malami SAN, declaring the Amotekun initiative illegal.
An earlier meeting had to be rescheduled because the date of the meeting coincided with the period of the President’s official trip to the United Kingdom.

Good evening my good people. Our result just came out today and my worst imagination has happened. I saw my name in 2:2 division, what I have always tried to avoid since my year 1. I know it's my project supervisor that fvcked me up cause he has been hostile to me for no reason. I feel really bad, but that did has been done.

So, I just want to know how bad is 2:2 in Nigerian market? Is it something to count on or should I just move on like I never went to the university??

I need answers please!!

The Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Lagos State, Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly called MC Oluomo, has said he is talking to the Lagos State Government to review the ban and restriction on motorcycle and tricycle riders in the state.

He noted that he was also meeting with bus drivers not to increase bus fares, which could worsen the effect of the ban on commuters.

Oluomo spoke to The PUNCH on Monday through his aide, Jimoh Buhari.

The NURTW boss expressed optimism that his discussion with the government on the matter would yield positive results.

“The most important thing, for now, is for the bus drivers not to take advantage of the situation, and that is why we are meeting with them,” he added.

Lagos State Government has rolled out 65 high capacity buses in addition to the existing buses as part of palliative measures to the restriction of commercial motorcycles and tricycles in parts of the State.

The Managing Director of Lagos Bus Services Limited, Idowu Oguntona, announced this deployment at a press conference in Lagos on Monday.

Oguntona disclosed that these buses, which started work today have recorded about 10,000 customers in the early hours of today, adding that the 65 buses will convey a total of 35,000 Lagosians daily.

He also disclosed that the buses will ply seven routes across the affected areas.

“We are here today to witness the official deployment of an additional 65 buses into the bus service to basically ease the current pressure that may be experienced on Lagos roads.

“We have Oshodi-Ajah, Inner Marina-Ajah, Obalende-Ajah and CMS-Ajah. Addressing the challenge in Ikeja, you have Ikeja-Ojota, Ikeja-Ogba, Berger-Ojota.

“Those are the seven routes the 65 buses will be deployed on and the impact will be such that at least 35,000 Lagosians will be in a very efficient, safe manner across the Metropolis,” he said.

Speaking on the question of introducing minibuses to ply the nook and crannies of Lagos, Oguntona assured that 550 medium-capacity vehicles for feeder routes will be injected as soon as possible.

He said: “We recognize the fact that some of the buses cannot go on the feeder roads, so the plan is to inject 550 medium capacity buses that can carry about 30 people and those minibuses will be deployed on the feeder roads, so there won't be any significant impact of the ban on commuters.”

The Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration has restricted commercial motorcycles and tricycles in some Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Authorities due to flagrant disobedience to traffic regulations and total disregard for safety by operators among other reasons.
