Nigeria’s Oil Rigs Plummet 27% Amid 2 Million BPD Output Target

Nigeria, Africa’s largest oil producer, is grappling with a 27 percent year-to-date drop in active oil rigs, posing a significant challenge to the federal government’s ambitious goal of reaching a daily crude oil output of 2 million barrels per day (bpd) by the end of December 2024.

Latest data from the November 2024 Monthly Oil Market Report of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) shows that the number of functional oil drilling rigs across the country declined to 11 in October.

OPEC data showed that the country operated an average of 17, 17 and 14 oil rigs in the first, second, and third quarters of 2024, respectively.

An oil rig/platform is a large structure that houses facilities for extracting and processing petroleum and natural gas from rock formations beneath the seabed.

The rig count reflects the level of exploration, development, and production activities in a country’s oil and gas sector. Active oil exploration attracts investment and revenues into the country for economic growth.

“Nigeria, a previously bright spot on big oil and gas investors’ radar screens, has dimmed significantly as investor attention is increasingly drawn to new and emerging developments in Namibia, Ivory Coast, Angola, and the Republic of Congo,” NJ Ayuk, executive chairperson of the African Energy Chamber, said.

“With two-thirds or more of its revenue coming from oil, investor flight is a serious problem for Nigeria.”

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) revealed that the country’s foreign capital investments in the industry fell from $720 million in 2016 to $3.64 million by 2023.

According to the report, the petroleum industry received nothing from the $3.38 billion in capital imports into Nigeria during the first three months of 2024.

The federal government had set out to hit the target of 2 million bpd in December this year, a development that now looks like a tall order as the country’s rig declines.

Heineken Lokpobiri, minister of state for petroleum (oil), said: “The shortest way for us to get out of our current economic problems is to increase production.

“And our target is that by December we want to hit at least two million barrels,” Lokpobri said.

In addition, the government claimed that Nigeria is currently revving up output, producing 1.8 million bpd as of November 2024.

Mele Kyari, group chief executive officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), said that the state-owned oil company and its partners have increased crude oil and gas production to 1.8 million barrels per day (mbpd) and 7.4 standard cubic feet per day (scfd) respectively.

“The team has done a great job in driving this project of not just production recovery but also escalating production to expected levels that are in the short and long terms acceptable to our shareholders based on the mandates that we have from the President, the Honourable Minister and the Board,” Kyari explained.

Meanwhile, OPEC’s latest oil market report revealed that Nigeria’s crude oil production recorded an average of 35,000 barrels increase in crude output in October, rising to 1.434 million barrels per day (bpd).

According to the report, production rose from 1.399 million bpd in September, according to secondary data from Nigerian authorities.

Direct communication showed that Nigeria’s average crude oil production for October was 1.333 million bpd, an increase of 9,000 barrels compared to 1.324 million bpd in the previous month.

Stock Market Performance Deflated By CBN’s Interest Rate Hike

The stock market’s negative reaction to the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) recent interest rate hike caused the Nigerian Exchange Limited, or NGX, to close lower last week.

The benchmark interest rate, known as the Monetary Policy Rate, or MPR, was raised by 25 basis points to 27.5 from 27.25% last week by the apex bank’s Monetary Policy Committee, or MPC.

This is the sixth straight rate increase this year, raising the total rate increase from 225 basis points in 2023 to 875 basis points this year.

The primary performance indicator, the NGX All-Share Index (ASI), decreased by 0.3% week over week, W/W, to close at 97,507.87 points from 97, 829.02 points the week before, reflecting the impact of the stock market’s MPC decision.

While WAPCO gained 7.4%, Oando 6.7%, and FBNH 3.5%, the market was severely impacted by sell pressures on Seplat, which had a 6.0% fall, GTCO 3.0%, and MTN Nigeria 1.2%.

The week under review saw strong market activity, with trading volume and value increasing by 63.6% W/W and 52.8% W/W, respectively. While the Insurance Index increased by 1.2% and the Industrial Goods Index by 0.8%, sectoral performance was uneven, with the Oil & Gas Index down 1.9%, the Consumer Goods Index by 0.4%, and the Banking Index by 0.30 percent.

In the meantime, month-over-month research revealed that investors lost N64 billion in market capitalization and the market fell by 0.1%, meaning that the entire value of investments on the Exchange closed Friday at N59.207 trillion, down from N59.271 trillion at the end of October, 2024

Ohanaeze Joins Southwest, South-South, Northcentral In Backing Tinubu Tax Bills

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu‘s plan to reform Nigeria’s tax laws got a boost yesterday, with Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex socio- cultural organisation from the South-east joining the South-west, South-south and North-central parts of Nigeria to support the landmark bills expected to significantly alter the existing fiscal framework.

Wading into the debate on the much-talked-about proposed legislations, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, in a statement issued by the Secretary General of the body, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, noted that the bills represent a transformative opportunity for the rejuvenation of Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and the enhancement of the fortunes of Nigerian workers.

But the controversy over the four tax bills continued yesterday, with former Vice President Atiku Abubukar, however urging federal lawmakers to prioritise equity and inclusivity in deliberations on the proposed legislations.
The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general elections emphasised that Nigerians are currently united in their demand for reforms that do not exacerbate the nation’s uneven development.

THISDAY learnt that federal lawmakers from the South-west, South-south and North-central were already in on the need to alter the current framework to serve the generality of Nigerians.
The bills have recently received mixed reactions from members of the public, as the gulf between the proponents and those opposed to the bills, especially the part dealing with the derivation formula in Value Added Tax (VAT) has widened.
Among key figures that have publicly spoken on the issue are the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibril, who opined that those criticising the tax bills had not even read them.

However, the Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Zulum, who had earlier raised the alarm that the tax bills will further pauperise the northern states, speaking during an interview on a national television yesterday, doubled down on his opposition to the proposed legislations.

In backing the federal government’s move, the Isiguzoro-led Ohanaeze Ndigbo added that by eliminating the scourge of double taxation imposed by state governors, the reforms would pave the way for an equitable business climate that significantly elevates both local and foreign investment potential.

“In an emphatic affirmation of progress and economic empowerment, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the esteemed apex socio-cultural organisation representing the Igbo nation, hereby announces its steadfast endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s proposed tax reforms bills.

“This endorsement comes after rigorous reviews, exhaustive consultations with an array of stakeholders, and an in-depth analysis of the bills’ implications for the Nigerian economic landscape.

“Our comprehensive evaluation has led us to the resolute conclusion that these tax reforms are not merely legislative proposals; they represent a transformative opportunity for the rejuvenation of SMEs and the enhancement of the fortunes of Nigerian workers.

“By eliminating the scourge of double taxation imposed by unscrupulous state governors, these reforms will pave the way for an equitable business climate that significantly elevates both local and foreign investment potential.

“The Igbo people, renowned for our entrepreneurial spirit and unwavering commitment to economic self-determination, stand to gain immensely from these reforms,” Isiguzoro argued.

According to him, the proposed measures are expected to safeguard the private sector, particularly benefiting the ‘industrious Igbos’, who he said play a pivotal role in driving the Nigerian economy through vibrant SME activities.
The apex Igbo body further called on southern lawmakers in the National Assembly to unify their efforts in support of what it described as Tinubu’s transformative restructuring programme within Nigeria’s economic and fiscal sectors.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo emphasised: “It is disheartening to observe the substantial opposition that has emerged from certain factions within Northern Nigeria regarding these critical reforms.

“There is palpable concern that Northern governors are mobilising their forces to stifle the progression of the tax reforms bills within the National Assembly, relying on their numerical predominance to assert undue influence.

“This orchestrated opposition appears driven by a desire to perpetuate the current VAT derivation principles that unjustly favour select interests at the expense of equitable national growth.

“The implications of such manoeuvres are profound. If the Northern political elites succeed in thwarting President Tinubu’s initiatives, it could set a dangerous precedent, fostering a climate of resistance against meaningful reform.
“This scenario poses a tangible threat not only to the president’s agenda but also to the broader economic aspirations of millions of Nigerians who yearn for a reformed and equitable system.”

The body further urged all stakeholders, including lawmakers, business actors, and citizens to unite in support of these pivotal tax reforms bills.
“It is imperative that our Southern Senators and House Of Representatives members close ranks, transcending partisan divides, to ensure that the Tax Reforms Bills navigate both chambers of the National Assembly successfully.

“We wish to reiterate our unwavering commitment to show solidarity with President Tinubu, as we expect that the Southeast Federal Lawmakers will provide essential backing to these initiatives.

“This collective support is particularly noteworthy as it underscores our strategic alignment with the President following our decision to abstain from nationwide protests in August 2024, a decision made in the spirit of dialogue and cooperation,” it stated.

On the opposition from some leaders in the northern region against the proposed tax reforms, Ohanaeze submitted that the northerners are only trying to frustrate the bill because the status quo favours their selfish interest at the expense of national growth.
It urged all stakeholders to support the proposals as it promises sustainable economic growth towards a prosperous Nigeria.

“Nonetheless, it is disheartening to observe the substantial opposition that has emerged from certain quarters within Northern Nigeria regarding these critical reforms.

“There is palpable concern that Northern governors are mobilizing their forces to stifle the progression of the Tax Reforms Bills within the National Assembly, relying on their numerical predominance to assert undue influence.
“This orchestrated opposition appears driven by a desire to perpetuate the current VAT derivation principles that unjustly favor select interests at the expense of equitable national growth
.

“The implications of such maneuvers are profound. If the Northern political elites succeed in thwarting President Tinubu’s initiatives, it could set a dangerous precedent, fostering a climate of resistance against meaningful reform. This scenario poses a tangible threat not only to the President’s agenda but also to the broader economic aspirations of millions of Nigerians who yearn for a reformed and equitable system.

“Moreover, it cannot be overlooked that a successful passage of the Tax Reforms Bills could have far-reaching consequences for President Tinubu’s administration, potentially inciting a politically motivated backlash in the 2027 electoral landscape. It is essential that we, as a nation, confront these challenges decisively, fostering a collaborative spirit to advance our collective interests rather than allowing parochial motivations to derail our progress.

“In conclusion, Ohanaeze Ndigbo urges all stakeholders, including lawmakers, business actors, and citizens, to unite in support of these pivotal Tax Reforms Bills.

“The promise of a prosperous and just Nigeria is within our reach, but it demands our collective resolve to advocate for transparency, equity, and sustainable economic growth.

“Together, let us champion an agenda that uplifts all Nigerians and ensures that our legislative processes reflect the aspirations of a nation committed to progress and integrity,” the statement concluded.

Why Simon Ekpa Cannot Be Granted Bail – Finnish Authorities

Finnish authorities have given reasons why the controversial pro-Biafra agitator, Simon Ekpa, cannot be granted bail in Finland.

A Senior Detective Superintendent at Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation, Mikko Laaksonen, told Punch newspaper on Saturday that the Finnish legal system does not permit bail for suspects accused of the kind of offences Mr Ekpa is accused of.

PREMIUM TIMES earlier reported that Mr Ekpa was arrested alongside four others on 21 November on suspicion of terrorist activities.

The Finnish police said Mr Ekpa “has contributed to violence and crimes against civilians in South-eastern Nigeria.”

The District Court of Päijät-Häme later ordered that the pro-Biafra agitator be imprisoned “with probable cause on suspicion of public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent.”

He is expected to face charges in May 2025, according to Finnish authorities.

Mr Ekpa was indicted for financing terrorism alongside the four other suspects. The police have a suspicion that the Biafra agitator committed the crime of collecting money in violation of the Finnish Money Collection Act. The Finnish police said he allegedly committed the crimes between 23 August 2021 and 18 November 2024 in Lahti, a town in Finland.

IPOB is a group leading the agitation for an independent state of Biafra, which it wants carved out from the south-east and some parts of south-south Nigeria. The separatist group has been linked to some deadly attacks in the two regions, although it has repeatedly denied its involvement in the attacks.

Meanwhile, hours after the arrest, the IPOB faction loyal to Mr Kanu disowned Mr Ekpa last Friday, explaining that the pro-Biafra agitator was never their member.

When asked if Mr Ekpa’s charges were bailable or if the prosecution was disposed to releasing him on bail, Mr Laaksonen responded, “Finnish criminal procedure/coercive measures do not recognise bail procedure. Our procedure is based on, depending on the case, remand or travel ban as coercive measures for limiting freedom of movement for persons suspected of offences to which such measures are applicable.”

The situation implies that Mr Ekpa will remain imprisoned until May 2025, when he is scheduled to face trial at the District Court of Päijät-Häme in the North European country.

A fire incident killed six family members in the early hours of Monday in Ede, Osun State. The victims were identified as a Customs officer, Tijani Kabiru, attached to the Oyo/Osun Command, his wife, and four children.

The fire reportedly started around 2 am at the family’s residence in the Olowopoku area of Ede.

It was gathered that Kabiru, who was in his late 40s, was asleep alongside his wife and five children when the fire, believed to have originated from the solar panel installed on the roof of the house, engulfed the building.

“The fire started around 2:09 am from the roof of the house. An electric spark from the solar panel attached to the roof caused the fire.

“One of the children, a 13-year-old, was reading when the fire started. He ran to his father’s room and realised that his father and other family members were weak due to the emission of smoke. He ran out of the house to call for help. It was difficult for residents of the house to access the house due to the security of the house, like electric barbed wires and strong doors, among others.

“We informed the Fire Service men around 3:10 am. But before they arrived at the scene, Tijani, his wife, and four children were burnt to death,” a source disclosed.

The Public Relations Officer of Osun State Fire Service, Dekunle Ibraheem, when contacted, confirmed the incident.

“It is true that one Tijani, a Customs officer, his wife and four children were burnt to death. Only one of them escaped the scene. Their bodies were handed over to the men of A Division of the Nigeria Police Force,” he said.

EFCC Biggest Asset Recovery Yet As Govt Official Forfeits Estate With 753 Duplex

EFCC announces biggest asset recovery as govt official forfeits estate with 753 duplexes

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Monday announced the single largest asset recovery since its inception in 2003.

The development followed a ruling by Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie of the Federal Capital Territory High Court on the final forfeiture of an Abuja estate measuring 150,500 square metres and containing 753 units of duplexes and other apartments.

According to the EFCC, the estate, located on Plot 109 Cadastral Zone C09, Lokogoma District, Abuja, belonged to a government official.

“The forfeiture of the property to the federal government by a former top brass of the government was pursuant to EFCC’s mandate and policy directive of ensuring that the corrupt and fraudulent do not enjoy the proceeds of their unlawful activities,” the statement added.

The EFCC said it relied on Section 17 of the Advance Fee Fraud And Other Fraud Related Offences Act No 14, 2006 and Section 44 (2) B of the Constitution of the 199 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to push its case.

Ruling on the Commission’s application for the final forfeiture of the property, Justice Onwuegbuzie held that the respondent have not shown cause as to why he should not lose the property, “which has been reasonably suspected to have been acquired with proceeds of unlawful activities”.

“The property is hereby finally forfeited to the Federal Government,” the judge declared, according to the statement.

The statement added, “The road to the final forfeiture of the property was paved by an interim forfeiture order, secured before the same Judge on November 1, 2024.

“The government official which fraudulently built the estate is being investigated by the EFCC. The forfeiture of the asset is an important modality of depriving the suspect of the proceeds of the crime.

“The justification for the forfeiture is derived from Part 2, Section 7 of the EFCC Establishment Act, which stipulates that the EFCC “has power to cause investigations to be conducted as to whether any person, corporate body or organization has committed any offence under this Act or other law relating to economic and financial crimes and cause investigations to be conducted into the properties of any person if it appears to the Commission that the person’s lifestyle and extent of the properties are not justified by his source of income.”

The statement added that EFCC chairman, Ola Olukoyede, has repeatedly described asset recovery as pivotal in the fight against corruption, describing it as a major disincentive against the corrupt and the fraudulent.

Addressing members of the House of Representatives Committee on Anti-corruption recently, he said, “If you understand the intricacies involved in financial crimes investigation and prosecution you will discover that to recover one billion naira is war.

“So, I told my people that the moment we start investigation we must also start asset tracing because asset recovery is pivotal in the anti-corruption fight; and one of the potent instruments that you can deploy as an anti-corruption agency for an effective fight is asset tracing and recovery.

“If you allow the corrupt or those that you are investigating to have access to the proceeds of their crime, they will fight you with it. So one of the ways to weaken them is to deprive them of the proceeds of their crime.”

8 Situations In Life Where A Person’s True Colors Always Come Out

8 situations in life where a person’s true colors always come out, according to psychology

We’ve all heard the saying, “actions speak louder than words.” And there’s a lot of truth in that. Actions reveal our true character, more so than words ever can.

Psychology tells us that there are certain situations that really bring out a person’s true colors. These are the moments where you can see who a person truly is, beyond their words and their public persona.

In this article, we’re going to dive into eight situations in life where, according to psychology, a person’s true colors are most likely to shine through. We’ll unpack these scenarios and help you understand what they reveal about a person’s character.

Let’s get started.

1) During times of crisis
Crisis situations are like a pressure cooker for our personalities.

The stress and uncertainty can often bring out the best, or worst, in people. It’s during these challenging times that our true character is put to the test.

Psychology tells us that when people are under extreme stress, their usual social masks may slip, revealing their true colors. This could be anything from how they react to bad news, handle pressure, or even how they treat others when they’re at their lowest.

When you find yourself in a crisis situation with someone, pay attention. Their behaviors and reactions during this time can tell you a lot about their true personality. But remember, it’s also important to offer grace and understanding as everyone handles stress differently.

2) When they’re experiencing success
We often say that adversity reveals character, but so does success.

When people achieve their goals or experience a big win, their response can be very telling. Some might remain humble, share their success with others, or even use their newfound position to help those around them. Others might become arrogant, selfish, or even indifferent to those who helped them along the way.

I remember when I got promoted at my previous job. It was a big step up for me and I was thrilled. But I noticed a significant change in one of my colleagues who also got promoted. They became dismissive of others’ ideas, started taking credit for team efforts, and their entire demeanor changed. It was a stark contrast to the supportive and collaborative person they were before the promotion.

3) How they treat service staff
They say you can tell a lot about a person by how they treat those who can do nothing for them. This is especially true when it comes to how people treat service staff.

Whether it’s the waiter at a restaurant, the cashier at a grocery store, or the janitor at an office, these interactions can be very telling. Some people show kindness and respect, regardless of someone’s job or social status. Others may dismiss or belittle service workers, showing a lack of empathy and respect.

People who are rude to waitstaff tend to have higher levels of narcissism and a greater sense of entitlement.

When you’re out with someone, pay attention to how they treat the service staff. It can tell you more about their character than you might think.

4) When they’re behind the wheel
You might be surprised to learn that a person’s driving habits can reveal a lot about their personality.

Driving is a high-pressure activity that often requires quick decision-making. And how a person reacts on the road can give you a glimpse into their true colors. Do they remain calm and collected, or do they succumb to road rage? Are they considerate of other drivers, or do they only care about getting to their destination as fast as possible?

In these situations, people’s patience, empathy, and anger management skills (or lack thereof) can come to the fore.

5) How they handle loss
Life, as we know, isn’t always smooth sailing. We all face losses and disappointments at some point or another. It’s during these moments of loss that a person’s true colors often shine through.

Loss is a deeply personal experience, and there’s no right or wrong way to handle it. But how a person deals with loss can reveal a lot about their character. Do they allow themselves to grieve? Do they turn to others for support or tend to isolate themselves? How do they talk about their loss?

Watching someone navigate through the pain of loss can be heartbreaking, but it can also be a window into their soul. It shows their resilience, their strength, and their vulnerability – elements that make up the core of who they are.

When someone is going through a tough time, it’s not just about offering support – it’s also an opportunity to understand them better.

6) When they are asked for help
There’s a lot to be said about a person who is always ready to lend a helping hand.

When someone asks for help, it’s an opportunity to see a person’s altruistic side. Some may jump at the chance to assist, showing empathy and understanding. Others may see it as an inconvenience, or even ignore the request entirely.

I remember when my car broke down on a deserted road late at night. Stranded and scared, I called a few friends for help. One of them, despite living on the other side of town and having an early morning meeting, immediately drove over to help me out. That act of kindness showed me the depth of their character and it’s something I’ll never forget.

Watch how someone reacts when asked for help. It can tell you a lot about their values and their character.

7) How they react to other people’s success
Success can be a tricky thing. It’s wonderful when it’s ours, but how do we react when it’s someone else’s?

This can often be a revealing situation. Some individuals are genuinely happy for others, celebrating their accomplishments as if they were their own. But others may react with envy or bitterness, feeling threatened by someone else’s success.

These reactions can tell you a lot about a person’s character. Genuine happiness for others’ success shows selflessness and a secure sense of self-worth. On the other hand, negative reactions could point to insecurity or competitiveness.

When someone shares their success story, pay attention to the reactions around you. You might learn more about those people than you expect.

8] When they think no one is watching
The ultimate test of a person’s character is what they do when they believe no one is watching.

Are they still kind, honest, and respectful when there’s no audience to impress? Or do they behave differently when they think they’re not being observed?

This can be very telling. A person’s actions in these moments are a reflection of their true character, unfiltered and genuine.

It’s not just about how people treat us or how they behave in certain situations. It’s also about what they do when they think no one is watching. That’s when their true colors really shine through.

'He Doesn’t Know We’re Married': Crazy Things Some Women Do For Love & Marriage (Pix)

I stumbled on this story online, complete with pictures and I chuckled throughout my time reading.

When a man is getting all the marriage benefits and refuses to do the needful, well, I guess it is time to get creative. Cunny man die, cunny man bury am. grin

Enjoy cheesy

He doesn’t know we’re married….

So, we dated for about 2 years and I decided I was ready to get married and settle down. About 3 years ago, he told me that he was saving up for a ring and that he wanted to surprise me with the proposal of my dreams!!! ❤️

Lo & behold, a few months passed, and STILL no proposal. I asked him when he planned on doing it, and he told me he had simply “changed his mind.” Why would he buy the cow when he is already getting the milk for free😭

I felt like he scammed me, and I was done letting men scam me. Fed uppp. So, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I found a man on the Internet who looked just like him, and while he was sleeping I went ahead and took his ID along with his birth certificate. I offered his look alike who happened to be pretty much homeless $1,000 to come to the courthouse with me, and we did the thangggg 🙌🏾🙌🏾😮‍💨🤸🤸😁

We’ve been married now for almost two years, and I’ve never been happier. I am moving and behaving like a wife in every sense. I’ve been cooking everyday, washing laundry, and taking great care of my husband. He has complimented me many times on how amazing I am, and how well I perform my duties as his lady. On Valentines Day this year, he even decorated our room and he had the word WIFE written with flowers, I thought, how ironic!!! Little does he know, I’m his wife 😍😮‍💨😇

My question is, how do I tell him we are official now? Should I just hope that he changes his mind and eventually proposes on his own once he sees how amazing I am? We are past the 1 year mark, so I no longer have to worry about an annulment, which is great! We went on vacation about a week after our ceremony, and for me, it was our honeymoon. We’ve never been happier, I just really need him to be onboard with all of this. He noticed I was wearing a ring on my ring finger, and I told him it was to keep other men away!! He jokingly mentioned how good it looks. I’m tired of keeping our marriage a secret, and I feel like he has a right to know!!! Any advice appreciated.

Mother Of Late Sylvester Oromoni, Victim of Dowen College Bullying, Dies Seven Months After Court Dismissed Case

Rosemary Oromoni, the mother of Sylvester Oromoni, the 12-year-old boy who tragically died in 2021 after allegedly being bullied at Dowen College in Lagos, has reportedly passed away.

It was gathered that her death occurred in late November, following a battle with intermittent blood pressure-related health issues.

Meanwhile, Mrs Oromoni's death comes just over seven months after a special court in Lagos ruled against the family in April.

In April, SaharaReporters reported that a Lagos State Coroner Inquest court sitting in Ogba Magistrate Court ruled that the death of a 12-year-old student of Dowen College, Lekki, Sylvester Junior was caused by the negligence of his parent and doctor.

The Coroner Magistrate, Mikhail Kadiri, determined that Oromoni died as a result of failing treatment for his enlarged liver.

Oromoni had died on November 30, 2021. His death was linked to a bully and an alleged deadly chemical he was forced to consume at school.

He was alleged to have stated that he was beaten up by five Dowen College senior students: Favour Benjamin, 16, Edward Begue, 16, Ansel Temile, 14, Kenneth Inyang, and Micheal Kashamu, 16, son of late Senator Buruji Kashamu, before his death.

However, on January 5, 2022, the Lagos State Government exonerated five pupils and five employees of Dowen College in Lekki, Lagos, who had been accused of Sylvester Oromoni's death.

“Based on the foregoing it is clear that the deceased health deteriorated in (parents) PW 3’s care,” Kadiri was quoted.

He continued: “PW 3, did not take proper care of the deceased, PW 3, completely abandoned the deceased for a period of more than 32 hours.

“The deceased’s death was an avoidable one but for the negligence of the parents and PW 3, they didn’t take him to the hospital until the day he died on November 30, 2021.

“The deceased went through an avoidable and excruciating pain and made to suffer needlessly,” Kadiri said.

Afghanistan: Taliban Suspends All Female Students In Nursing & Midwife Schools

Women training as midwives and nurses in Afghanistan have told the BBC they were ordered not to return to classes in the morning - effectively closing off their last route to further education in the country.

Five separate institutions across Afghanistan have also confirmed to the BBC that the Taliban had instructed them to close until further notice, with videos shared online showing students crying at the news.

The BBC has yet to confirm the order officially with the Taliban government's health ministry.

However, the closure appears to be in line with the group's wider policy on female education, which has seen teenage girls unable to access secondary and higher education since August 2021.

The Taliban have repeatedly promised they would be readmitted to school once a number of issues were resolved - including ensuring the curriculum was "Islamic".

This has yet to happen.

One of the few avenues still open to women seeking education was through the country's further education colleges, where they could learn to be nurses or midwives.

Midwifery and nursing are also one of the only careers women can pursue under the Taliban government's restrictions on women - a vital one, as male medics are not allowed to treat women unless a male guardian is present.

Just three months ago, the BBC was given access to one Taliban-run midwife training centre, where more than a dozen women in their 20s were learning how to deliver babies.

The women were happy to have been given the chance to learn.

“My family feels so proud of me," a trainee called Safia said. "I have left my children at home to come here, but they know I’m serving the country."

But even then, some of the women expressed fear about whether even this might be stopped eventually.

What will happen to those women - and another estimated 17,000 women on training courses - is unclear.

No formal announcement has been made, although two sources in the Ministry of Health confirmed the ban to BBC Afghan off the record.

In videos sent to the BBC from other training colleges, trainees can be heard weeping.

"Standing here and crying won’t help," a student tells a group of women in one video. "The Vice and Virtue officials [who enforce Taliban rules] are nearby, and I don’t want anything bad to happen to any of you."

Other videos shared with the BBC show women quietly protesting as they leave the colleges - singing as they make their way through the hallways.

One Kabul student said she had been told to "wait until further notice".

Even though it is the end of our semester, exams have not yet been conducted, and we have not been given permission to take them," she told the BBC.

Another student revealed they "were only given time to grab our bags and leave the classrooms".

"They even told us not to stand in the courtyard because the Taliban could arrive at any moment, and something might happen. Everyone was terrified," she said. "For many of us, attending classes was a small glimmer of hope after long periods of unemployment, depression, and isolation at home."

What this means for women's healthcare also now remains to be seen: last year, the United Nations said Afghanistan needed an additional 18,000 midwives to meet the country's needs.

Afghanistan already has one of the worst maternal mortality rates in the world, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), with a report released last year noting 620 women were dying per 100,000 live births.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES: PROMOTING INCLUSION AND EMPOWERMENT

December 3 is celebrated globally as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD). Proclaimed in 1992 by the United Nations General Assembly, this day aims to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in every aspect of society. It also seeks to increase awareness about the challenges they face and to highlight the importance of their inclusion in all areas of development. At PICMAC Foundation, we recognize this day as an opportunity to advocate for a world that values diversity and ensures equal opportunities for everyone, regardless of ability.

Understanding Disability

Disability is an umbrella term that encompasses various conditions that may limit an individual’s ability to perform certain activities. These conditions can be physical, sensory, intellectual, or emotional. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that over 1 billion people, or approximately 15% of the global population, live with some form of disability.

Disabilities vary in severity and type. They may be visible, such as physical impairments, or invisible, such as mental health conditions. However, the barriers faced by persons with disabilities often arise not from their conditions but from societal attitudes, environmental obstacles, and systemic discrimination.

The Significance of the International Day

The theme for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities changes annually, focusing on specific aspects of disability inclusion. However, the overarching goal remains the same: to build a more inclusive society where persons with disabilities are empowered to contribute meaningfully. This day serves multiple purposes:

1. Raising Awareness: It highlights the struggles and achievements of persons with disabilities, encouraging societies to take action toward inclusivity.

2. Advocacy: It provides a platform for individuals and organizations to advocate for policies and practices that ensure the rights of persons with disabilities.

3. Celebrating Diversity: It reminds us that disability is a natural part of the human experience and that everyone deserves dignity and respect.

Challenges Faced by Persons with Disabilities

Despite global progress, persons with disabilities continue to face significant barriers in accessing education, employment, healthcare, and social opportunities. These challenges include:

1. Stigmatization and Discrimination: Negative stereotypes and prejudices often marginalize persons with disabilities, limiting their opportunities and self-esteem.

2. Lack of Accessibility: Inaccessible buildings, transportation, and digital platforms hinder participation in everyday activities.

3. Unemployment: Persons with disabilities are often excluded from the job market due to misconceptions about their abilities.

4. Inadequate Healthcare: Many individuals face difficulties accessing affordable and appropriate healthcare services.

5. Limited Education Opportunities: In many regions, inclusive education systems are either underdeveloped or nonexistent, depriving children with disabilities of their right to learn.

Inclusion: A Shared Responsibility

Creating an inclusive society requires a collective effort. Governments, organizations, and individuals all play critical roles in ensuring persons with disabilities can lead fulfilling lives.

1. Policy Reforms: Governments should implement and enforce policies that protect the rights of persons with disabilities. This includes the adoption of laws aligned with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD).

2. Education and Training: Schools and institutions must embrace inclusive education practices, providing support systems that cater to diverse learning needs.

3. Workplace Inclusivity: Employers should foster environments that accommodate and value employees with disabilities. Offering flexible work options, assistive technologies, and anti-discrimination training are effective ways to promote inclusivity.

4. Community Support: Communities should actively engage in creating accessible infrastructure, such as ramps, elevators, and tactile pathways, to ensure physical spaces are open to everyone.

5. Awareness Campaigns: Media and advocacy groups should continue to raise awareness about the abilities and potential of persons with disabilities, challenging stereotypes and promoting acceptance.

The Role of Technology

Advancements in technology have significantly improved the lives of persons with disabilities. Assistive devices, such as screen readers, hearing aids, and mobility aids, empower individuals to navigate their environments and achieve greater independence.

Moreover, digital tools and platforms can bridge gaps in education and employment. For instance, remote learning and telecommuting provide opportunities for persons with disabilities to access resources and work without physical constraints.

PICMAC Foundation’s Commitment

At PICMAC Foundation, we are dedicated to championing the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities. Through our programs and initiatives, we aim to:

1. Promote Inclusive Education: By offering accessible learning opportunities, we ensure that everyone, regardless of ability, has a chance to thrive.

2. Empower through Skill Development: We organize training sessions that equip persons with disabilities with the skills needed to secure meaningful employment.

3. Raise Awareness: Our awareness campaigns challenge societal prejudices and foster understanding about disability.

4. Support Families: We provide resources and guidance to families of persons with disabilities, helping them navigate challenges and celebrate their loved ones’ potential.

How You Can Get Involved

There are many ways you can support the goals of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities:

1. Volunteer: Offer your time and skills to organizations that work with persons with disabilities.

2. Advocate: Use your voice to advocate for policies and practices that promote inclusivity.

3. Educate Yourself: Learn about different types of disabilities and the barriers people face, then share this knowledge with others.

4. Support Businesses: Patronize businesses owned by or employing persons with disabilities.

Conclusion

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is more than a day of recognition; it is a call to action. It challenges us to break down barriers, foster understanding, and create opportunities for all. At PICMAC Foundation, we believe that every individual has something valuable to contribute. By embracing diversity and inclusion, we can build a society that truly leaves no one behind. Let us use this day to reaffirm our commitment to equality, empower persons with disabilities, and celebrate the rich tapestry of humanity. Together, we can create a world where ability, not disability, defines a person’s potential.

World AIDS Day: Rotary Club Jabi Lakeside Calls For Collective Action to Fight Scourge

As the global community marks World AIDS Day, Rotary Club of Abuja Jabi Lakeside has called for a collective action to tackle the scourge, decrying poor access to health care among community.

The President of Rotary Club, Jabi Lakeside Abuja, Amobi Ogum gave this advice in a statement on Sunday, noting that time has come to raise awareness and curb the spread of HIV.

Citing WHO record, he said about 90 million people have been infected with HIV, and approximately 45 million people have died from AIDS-related illnesses.

"As at the end of 2023, around 40 million people were reported to be living with HIV worldwide. Sadly, Africa has been the hardest hit by this epidemic, with one in every 30 adults living with HIV, accounting for more than two-thirds of the global population living with HIV", he stated.

He reiterated the commitment of Rotary Club Jabi Lakeside Abuja to contribute meaningfully to the health of communities.

"As Rotarians, today presents an opportunity to reflect on how far we've come in addressing the HIV/AIDS crisis. But more importantly, it is a call to action. As people of service, we must recognize that in many communities, access to treatment is still limited, and basic education about the disease remains a significant challenge", he added.

He announced that Rotary Club of Abuja Jabi Lakeside will embark on a visit to HIV/AIDS patients to offer encouragement and financial support.

"Additionally, in collaboration with some NGOs and a few of our friends, we will distribute condoms to underserved areas as a small but meaningful step toward raising awareness and curbing the spread of the virus", the statement noted.

He called for more compassionate action, and commitment to creating lasting change, adding that this is what the fight against HIV/AIDS demands, "collective action driven by empathy and a shared commitment and responsibility to build a healthier world."

South Africa Simplifies Visa Process For Nigerians, No More Passport Submission

Presidency: S’Africa Scraps Passport Submission For Nigerians During Visa Applications.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has cancelled passport submissions during tourist visa applications for Nigerians.

Bayo Onanuga, the special adviser to President Bola Tinubu on information and strategy, announced Ramaphosa’s decision in a statement.

One of the requirements to obtain a South African visa is the submission of the national passport.

Onanuga said Ramaphosa scrapped the process on Tuesday at the opening of the 11th session of the Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission (BNC) in Cape Town, which Tinubu attended.

Ramaphosa said South Africa’s efforts to strengthen bilateral relations with Nigeria saw the implementation of a five-year multiple-entry visa.

“Our efforts to create a favourable environment include our simplified visa process for Nigerian businesspeople to travel to South Africa. Qualifying Nigerian businesspeople can be granted a five-year multiple-entry visa,” the statement quoted the South African president to have said.

“As we mark 30 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, we see a bright future for our relationship. Our strong bonds of friendship provide a firm foundation for more meaningful economic cooperation.”

Onanuga said Tinubu commended Ramaphosa’s initiative, noting that he shared the belief that Nigeria and South Africa can leverage their potential for continental development.

“I must, however, sound a note of caution. Let us not count our successes by the number of MoUs and agreements signed. They will be mere papers until we implement them,” Tinubu said.

The president urged government officials in charge of relevant sectors to ensure that agreements are effectively implemented.
