President Muhammadu Buhari is keenly interested in the ongoing investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) into how state governors spent the N552.74 billion Paris Club loan refund shared to the states by the Federal Government last December. A highly-placed official in the Presidency disclosed this to our correspondent yesterday.

The official, who pleaded not to be named, revealed that President Muhammadu Buhari particularly got interested in the matter following “mind-boggling allegations” in the way the governors expended the funds. According to the official, the position of President Buhari’s administration is that the governors concerned should go and face the probe.

The source emphasised that Buhari wanted the investigation to be “logically concluded” and would not shield any governors indicted. He stated: “If the president would shield any of the governors, would he have asked for the investigation in the first place? Nobody is above the law. The governors should realise that they are not above the law.

“Everybody in this country knows this administration is committed to the fight against corruption. All that the administration wants is that regarding the ongoing investigation into the Paris Club loan refund, the EFCC should be fair to everybody concerned.

“It was because of some allegations that the investigation was called for. The allegations include diversion of the monies into private pockets. Another allegation is that of the hiring of phony consultants to pocket the money. Who are these consultants? What was their role? Who hired them? Where are the monies?”

The Paris Club loan refunds arose sequel to the claims submitted by the states that they had been overcharged in deductions for external debt servicing between 1995 and 2002.

President Muhammadu Buhari had on December 22, 2016 approved the sum of N552.74bn to be paid in batches to the 33 states owed.

Findings showed that as of last month, out of the N552.74 billion approved by the president, N388 billion had been released to the states, with Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Lagos and Kaduna reportedly getting N14.5 billion each.

While Jigawa, Imo, Borno and Niger States were said to have received N13 billion each, Benue and Bauchi States had received N12 billion each.

Other beneficiaries were Enugu, N9.9 billion; Ekiti, N8.8 billion; Nasarawa, N8.4 billion; Gombe, N8.3 billion; Oyo, N7.2 billion; Ondo, N6.5 billion; Kwara, N5.4 billion; Adamawa, N4.8 billion; Taraba, N4.2 billion and Ebonyi, N3.3 billion.

Investigators of the EFCC are said to have summoned the three signatories to the account of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF).

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, had in a statement last year, disclosed that Buhari requested governors to pay at least 25 percent of the refunds made to them from excess deductions for external debt service to be used to settle outstanding workers’ entitlements.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has requested governors to pay at least 25 percent of the refunds made to them from excess deductions for external debt service, to be used to settle outstanding workers’ entitlements.

“The President approved the sum of N552.74 billion to be paid in batches to all the states that are owed, but they are expected to receive 25% of their approved sums in the first instance before this week runs out. There are about 33 states in this bracket.

“The refunds arose following the claims by them that they had been overcharged in deductions for external debt service between 1995 and 2002.

“In a directive through the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, President Buhari said that the issue of workers’ benefits, particularly salary and pensions mustn’t be allowed to continue as a national problem and should be tackled with all the urgency that can be summoned.

“When he assumed office last year, the President declared an emergency over unpaid salaries, following the discovery that 27 out of the country’s 36 states had fallen behind in the payments to their workers, in some cases for up to a year. Following this, a bailout loan was issued to the states twice with a first batch of about N300 billion given to them in 2015 in the form of soft loans.

“The administration also got the Debt Management Office, DMO to restructure their commercial loans of over N660 billion and extended the life span of the loans. Because this did not succeed in pulling many of the states out of distress, the Federal government this year gave out a further N90 billion to 22 states as yet another bailout loans under very stringent conditions.

“President Buhari has expressed the opinion all the time that the payment of salaries and pensions must be given priority to save both serving and retired workers and their families from distress,” Shehu had stated.[/quote]

Oba Fredrick Obateru: The First Black Man To Own A Bentley Mulsanne

$

0
Fredrick Obateru Akinruntan (born 1950) is a Nigerian monarch, the traditional ruler of Ugbo Kingdom, a town in Ilaje, Ondo State, southwestern Nigeria. He is an oil magnate and founder of Obat Oil, one of Nigeria's largest and leading privately held oil companies.

In March 2014 Forbes estimated his net worth as US$300 million. Obateru is ranked by Forbes magazine as the second richest King in Africa and the richest in Nigeria. He surpassed King Olubuse II, the late Ooni of Ife, with $225 million and the Swaziland King Mswati III by over $200 million to become Africa's second richest king in 2014 behind Mohammed VI of Morocco. He has a custom built 2012 Rolls Royce similar to that of Queen Elizabeth II and on January 14, 2014, in an interview with Daily Post, he said, "I have a $1 million watch, I use the same type of car like the Queen of England".

Obateru is the first black person to buy the 2014 model of Bentley automobile. On July 2013, in an interview with The Sun, Obateru said: "The first time I saw a car was 1961 in Sapele. At that time, Sir Festus Okotie-Eboh had a hotel in Sapele, Waterside Hotel. It was the first time I saw a hotel in my life. We used to describe hotels as bars. That was the first time I knew the difference between a hotel and a bar." The monarch's love for cars can not be overemphasized as he is passionately and crazy about cars, The Olugbo as he fondly called is been reported to be the first Nigerian to a Bentley Mulsanne. We decided to take a look at this sleek, powerful and luxury car so as to ascertain why would a king decided to have it at all cost. Read below.

Introduction
The Mulsanne is a thoroughly modern full-size sedan that captures the essence of the Bentley marque. It is elegant yet distinctly sporting in character, delivering effortless performance while within its sumptuous cabin, advanced technology sits discreetly with handcrafted luxury.

Recent changes
For the latest model year, Bentley has split the Mulsanne lineup into three distinct models named Mulsanne, Mulsanne Speed, and Mulsanne Extended-Wheelbase. All three variants receive a facelift.

Overview
The style of the Mulsanne is a unique fusion of sportiness, coach-built elegance and solidity. Echoing the Bentley S -Type of the 1950s, the Mulsanne features a bold frontal design dominated by the traditional Bentley matrix grille and highly prominent, classic round inner headlamps with chrome surrounds, flanked by two, smaller outboard lamp clusters, all featuring the latest in lighting technology. The iconic 'Flying B' retractable radiator mascot is available as an option.

Power to Spare
Of course, it wouldn't be a Bentley if it didn't also offer an equally impressive and powerful engine: enter the 6.75-liter V8. Sharing its displacement and minor components with the legendary and historic "six-and-three-quarters" eight-cylinder used in previous Bentley models, the engine otherwise is totally revised for more power and improved fuel economy. The pushrod mill also features two new control systems: cam phasing and, a first for the ultra-luxury sector, a variable displacement setup that can effectively turn the V8 into a four-cylinder to save fuel during light-throttle cruising situations. The big motor is capable of producing a prodigious 505 horsepower and 752 lb-ft of torque. It is matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission that can be controlled with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Despite the fuel saving measures, the Bentley's firepower and mass can't cheat physics, and fuel economy checks in at 11 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway.

Craftsmanship and Technology Inside
The Mulsanne's cabin offers both old-world opulence and the latest in technology features. It takes over 90 hours to complete, and is finished in high-quality mirror-matched wood veneers, leather hides and hand-finished stainless steel, as well as new touches such as beautiful 'glass' switches. The upper dashboard houses an 8-inch multimedia screen, positioned unobtrusively behind an electrically operated veneered door, while below sits a stylish, leather-lined media player stowage drawer with connectors for iPod, USB, Mini USB and 3.5mm aux input. A 14-speaker audio system with Digital Signal Processing (DSP) and 6-CD autochanger is provided as standard while the Naim for Bentley premium audio system may be specified as an option. This forging of two British luxury brands provides customers with the world's most powerful production in-car amplifier with 2200 Watts, eight dedicated DSP modes and 20 custom-made speakers.

Mulsanne Speed
As its name implies, the Mulsanne Speed is a performance-focused variant of the ultra-luxurious Mulsanne sedan. The Mulsanne Speed is powered by an evolution of the Mulsanne's 6¾-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine that produces 530 horsepower and a prodigious 811 lb-ft. of torque from just 1,750 rpm. Linked to a ZF-built eight-speed automatic transmission, the eight-cylinder sends the 5,900-pound behemoth from zero to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 190 mph.

Rice is one of the staple foods in the country. Every year until recent restrictions, Nigeria spends billions of dollars importing the product. A Facebook user was incensed over this situation and reacted. Here is the post he shares, showing photos demonstrating Nigeria's capacity for food manufacture.

"This rice mill is situated at Kafin Hausa town, Jigawa state. The rice (DANMODI RICE) tastes delicious for cooking and for swallow (tuwo). Why do we waste our money buying imported rice while we can get the same quality or even better at our backyard?

Dollar is gaining strength against our Naira because of our insistence to import commodities including food stuffs.

Buy made in Nigeria foodstuffs to save our Naira today."

Many of us remember the 1952 Volkswagen Beetle while growing up as kids. It was a popular car amongst teachers, civil servants and the average middle class Nigerian citizenry. As of today, this car is mostly used in Nigeria to teach learners how to drive or something like that. Truth is in Nigeria, we don’t really appreciate vintage/classic cars as much. But they are treasured in some other countries.

Would you believe this particular rusted 1952 Volkswagen Beetle was sold for €52,000 ($55,650) last week in Paris? Converting based on the current exchange rate, this beetle was put up for auction and sold for about 30Million Naira! No joke o.. Can you pay even half of such amount for this car?

The car was discovered after years, if not decades, in storage. Based on reports, the Type 1 Beetle was parked up in Sweden 50 years ago.

Is any Beetle owner reading this? You better epp yourself out of this recession by heading to the next Paris auction with your Ijapa.
