However, attentions must now turn to domestic matters as Chelsea look to build on last weekend’s routine win over Brighton – which was Frank Lampard’s first league victory at Stamford Bridge since arriving as manager in the summer.

Chelsea currently sit ninth in the Premier League table having won just three of their seven games so far but victory on the South Coast tomorrow would see them move level on points with third-placed Leicester.

However, Southampton are also desperate for points as they look to move clear of the relegation zone with the Saints just one point clear of 18th place so this won’t be an easy game for Chelsea.

Team news
Lampard will assess N’Golo Kante after he returned from an ankle injury in midweek but the Frenchman is expected to be passed fit to retain his place in the Chelsea midfield tomorrow afternoon.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek remains out with an Achilles injury while Emerson Palmieri (thigh), Antonio Rudiger (groin) are also still on the sidelines.

As for Southampton, they’ll be without Cedric Soares due to a muscle injury that he sustained last weekend while Moussa Djenepo is also ruled out with a hip injury.

The multi-billion High–Tech Greenhouse Farm established by Dangote Farms Limited, geared at boosting the cultivation of high-quality tomatoes in the country, has commenced full production in the commercial city of Kano.

The farm which is fully automated is the first of its kind in West Africa and is expected to transform the economy of the local tomato farmers, as the technology is expected to up their harvest from the current 10 tons per acre to as much as 40 tons.

Abdulkarim Kaita, managing director of the Dangote Tomatoes Company Processing Limited, confirmed this, on Thursday, during the visit of senior officials of the Kano Office of Central Bank of Nigeria to the farm.

Speaking to BusinessDay on the sidelines of the visit, Kaita disclosed that his company `s new investment in the farm is motivated by the quest to help Nigeria stop the over $350 million that is expended on the importation of fresh and processed tomatoes yearly.

He said his company had so far, injected over #3 billion in the development of the farm, which in the next three weeks, is expected to deliver high-quality tomato seedlings to tomato farmers across the 12 states of the Federation where the commodity is heavily cultivated.

“The management of the Dangote Farms, which is a subsidiary of Dangote Tomatoes Company Processing Limited is excited to reveal the tremendous effort that we are making to ensure that Nigeria becomes self –sufficient in tomato production.

“The planting medium you are looking at is called PAT MOOSE which has the capacity of producing 350 million seedlings per season that can be used to plant an estimate 12,000 hectares of tomato farm.

“We are glad to disclose that we are the first to bring this new technology into the country and this is going to fast track the yield of our tomato farmers tremendously.

“The project is being executed under the CBN `s Tomato Anchor-Borrowers Programme. The CBN will be paying for the seedling that we cultivating, and it will be distributed to farmers.

“The PAT MOOSE process you are seeing takes 3 weeks, after which it goes to the next stage, and the whole process of growing the tomato takes just three months” he explained.

Giving further insight into the value addition which the Greenhouse farm would provide, Kaita, noted that the introduction of the technology will put an end to post-harvest losses, as well as increase the volume of the harvest of the commodity.

In the same vein, he added that the introduction of the technology would lead to the expansion of production of the commodity, beyond the over 2.5 million tons of current consumer demand.

“Based on the study under the GEMS project, Nigeria has 171,000 hectares of land for tomato production, and if you multiply this with it the over 40 tons which the technology is capable of producing per hectare that means can grow our production to around 8 million tons.

“With this in the next two years, if Government effects the ban of the importation of commodity, just as it has been done in the case of rice, Nigeria will soon become a net exporter of the commodity.

NASA has officially announce about the future involves flying taxis, NASA is set to test its first all-electric X-plane to encourage and develop certification standards for an electric aircraft.

NASA’s X-57 Maxwell is now at the agency’s Armstrong Flight Research Center for testing.

NASA plans to test the aircraft’s electric propulsion system to check its reliability and inform other aircraft manufacturers dealing with all-electric configurations.

The X-57 is also termed as the X-57 Mod II (as in modification II) which does not feature wings. It is also worth noting that the X-plane was delivered by Empirical Systems Aerospace (ESAero) of San Luis Obispo, California on Wednesday, Oct 2nd.

NASA X PlaneThe electric aircraft replaces the traditional combustion engines with electric cruise motors. Now, the delivery of X-plane will allow NASA engineers to perform ground tests, taxi tests, and flight tests to end with.

It will undergo extensive ground testing to ensure that it is worth taking a flight in the first place.

“The X-57 Mod II aircraft delivery to NASA is a significant event, marking the beginning of a new phase in this exciting electric X-plane project,” said X-57 Project Manager Tom Rigney.

As mentioned, this is the Mod II configuration that will undergo ground testing. In addition to this, the Mod III and Mod IV models (or configurations) are also in progress to be tested at NASA Armstrong’s Flight Loads Laboratory.

Obviously, Mod III & IV will include wings to test it for flights and other factors in their testing.

While the test has already commenced, it will be interesting to see what it has to offer for the future.

Next game.

Arsenal will be hoping to cement their position in the top four with a win over Bournemouth on Sunday afternoon.

The Gunners head into the game off the back of an impressive 4-0 victory over Standard Liege in the Europa League on Thursday night with youngster Gabriel Martinelli bagging himself another brace.

However, attention turns to domestic matters tomorrow and Arsenal have the opportunity to move up to third in the Premier League table with a win over Bournemouth at the Emirates Stadium.

Unai Emery’s men drew 1-1 with Manchester United last week and are unbeaten in their last seven games in all competitions so the north Londoners will be confident of heading into the international break with a positive result under their belt.

However, Bournemouth won’t be heading to the Emirates just to make-up the numbers as Eddie Howe’s side are just one point behind Arsenal so they could move into the top four with a shock win tomorrow.

Team news

Arsenal have no fresh injury concerns to worry about but they’ll continue to be without Alexandre Lacazette due to an ankle injury that’s hampered him all season.

Emery is expected to make changes from the side that played on Thursday night with Bernd Leno, Sokratis, Granit Xhak, Matteo Guendouzi and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang among those set for recalls.

Hector Bellerin made his first start of the season in the Europa League but Emery is unlikely to risk him so soon while Mesut Ozil will be hoping to feature after not being involved in the last two Arsenal squads.

Bournemouth are set to welcome winger Ryan Fraser back following illness but Adam Smith is out with a hamstring injury and Dan Gosling remains on the sidelines with a hip complaint. Chris Mepham, David Brooks, Charlie Daniels and Junior Stanislas are also still unavailable.

Recruitment Crisis: IG’s Fight With Police Commission Gets Messier

and FEMI MAKINDE

The battle between the Nigeria Police Force leadership and the Police Service Commission is becoming messier as the Inspector - General of Police , Mohammed Adamu, has told the PSC that it has no powers to query the Deputy Inspectors -General of Police .

Sunday PUNCH learnt on Saturday that the IG pointedly informed the PSC in a letter that the DIGs were not under its control , contrary to the Police Service Commission Establishment Act 2001 .

Among other functions , the Act says the PSC “ shall be responsible for the appointment and promotion of persons to offices ( other than the office of the Inspector -General of Police ) in the Nigeria Police Force ; dismiss and exercise disciplinary control over persons ( other than the IG) and formulate policies and guidelines for the appointment , promotion , discipline and dismissal of officers of the Nigeria Police Force. ”

Findings indicated that the IG’ s letter was informed by the query issued by the PSC to the DIG in charge of Training and Development, Yakubu Jubrin , for alleged misconduct some weeks ago .

An impeccable source disclosed that Adamu responded to the query on behalf of Jubrin , stating that the commission could not issue queries to the DIG .

Following the police ’ s insistence on recruiting 10 ,000 constables on the grounds that it was their constitutional right the commission had queried Jubrin for releasing the names of successful candidates and inviting them for medical screening without its permission.

The source said , “ Are you aware that we queried the DIG , Training and Development, for misconduct ? Well , the IG responded on his behalf, saying the DIG was not under the commission and that he ( DIG ) was working on his ( IG) instructions . The DIG was supposed to have retired from service on October 1 , but we learnt that he is still coming to work in uniform. ”

The official added , “ The commission has frozen promotions and retirements in the police until the disagreement with the force is resolved . This means all retiring police officers cannot process their benefits because they have to obtain letters of retirement from the commission . Everything has stalled on account of this crisis and nobody in the government is saying anything. ”

One of our correspondents also learnt that the IG had demanded the return of eight Toyota Prado Sport Utility Vehicles given the commission ’s officials by a former IG, Ibrahim Idris .

It was learnt that the SUVs were given to the PSC Chairman , Musiliu Smith ; the Permanent Secretary and the commissioners to assist them in their oversight functions of the police .

Adamu was said to have asked the commission to return the SUVs , which he said were police property . However, he exempted Smith and the commissioner representing the police on the PSC board , AIG Lawal Bawa ( retd ) , from returning theirs .

Sunday PUNCH learnt that Bawa was President Muhammadu Buhari’s secondary school classmate .

Meanwhile, those expected to return their SUVs are retired Justice Clara Ogunbiyi ( North -East ) , representing the judiciary; Mohammed Najatu ( North - West ) , representing the women; and Braimoh Austin ( South -South ) , representing the media community .

Others are Rommy Mom ( North -Central ) , representing the human rights and civil society community ; Nkemka Jombo -Ofo ( South -East) , representing organised labour; and the erstwhile Permanent Secretary of the commission , Maurice Mbaeri , who has been redeployed to the Ministry of Police Affairs.

One of our correspondents learnt that the commission had decided to return the SUVs, but the absence of the commission ’ s chairman , who is out of the country , was said to have stalled the move .

The ultimatum for the return of the vehicles expired on Friday .

A source said , “ The IG has written to the commission to demand the return of the SUVs that were given to the commissioners by the immediate past IG, Ibrahim Idris , to assist them in their oversight functions.

“ The Toyota Prado SUVs were donated to the PSC chairman , the six commissioners and the Permanent Secretary by the past police management team , but Adamu has demanded in a letter that the vehicles should be returned to the police and the ultimatum expired on Friday . ”

Meanwhile, the retirement of three DIGs – Jubrin ( Training and Development) , Taiwo Lakanu ( Logistics and Supply ) and Godwin Nwobodo ( Information and Communications Technology ) – has created a vacuum in the police management team .

However, the PSC has yet to receive nominations for their replacement .

Force Public Relations Officer , Frank Mba, could not be reached for comments on the replacement for the retiring DIGs and other developments on the recruitment crisis.

However, speaking on condition of anonymity, a senior police officer close to the IG stated that the PSC was fighting a losing battle, saying the force had the support of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice , Abubakar Malami ( SAN) , on the police recruitment .

The ranking police officer touted legal advice from the AGF endorsing the takeover of the recruitment process by the IG.

“ There is no way the commission can win this battle, because the AGF supported the action taken so far by the police and he has also written strong legal advice in our favour .

“ On the SUVs , the commission should not be sharing the little police resources by taking vehicles from us. Can they defend or justify their action ?” the officer asked .

The PSC chairman recently stated that President Muhammadu Buhari had intervened in the dispute between the commission and the force over the recruitment of 10 ,000 constables . Smith said this at the presentation of the 2018 annual report of the commission to the President .

Commenting on the crisis, Lagos -based lawyer , Mr Jiti Ogunye, said according to the law , the PSC was the employer of every police officer in the country and could exercise powers in relation to their employment , promotion and service development .

He said the scenario playing out between the two bodies was a manifestation of dysfunctionality in government .

Ogunye added that despite the constitutional provision stipulating that the IG was subject to the directive of the President , he remained a member of the force .

“ Yes, we know that the IG under sections 214 and 215 of the constitution is subject to the directive of the President . But it does not mean he is no longer in the police over whom the PSC has authority .

“ What the IG is saying is like a school principal saying he is the one who has the power to recruit teachers and not the teaching service commission ,” he said.

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria , Mr Ebunoluwa Adegboruwa , said the PSC had the right to query any police officer apart from the IG. He added that the IG had no right to instruct the DIGs not to respond to any lawful directives given to them by the PSC .

Adegboruwa said , “ Whatever query the PSC has given to the DIGs , they are entitled to respond to it . If they refuse to do so, whatever punishment or a disciplinary measure is taken against them , they will serve it under the constitution .

“ The IG has no power whatsoever to reject or countermand or in any other way disrespect any lawful directive given by the PSC . It will amount to the rascality of the highest order for any IG to give a directive to any officer under him to disregard orders from the commission . ”

"We Are No More Buying SugarCane" - Nigerian Twitter Users

Outrage has sparked as Nigerian man, Oladapo, captures the moment a sugarcane seller was allegedly masturbating in broad daylight.

The man parked his truck and sugar cane one side and started masturbating in public in broad daylight even as people, cars, Keke, Okada were passing.

This has led to divided reactions. While some are worried about the health implications, that the man will still use the same hand to cut, sell the sugar cane, others are criticising the person that did the video. They are of the opinions that his privacy was invaded, but others disagreed and claim that the man 'raped' public decency by masturbating on the road.

While Emi ni Polaris @Iamhunter3 was against the person that filmed the guy:

"Nobody seem to be concerned about the person that left everything he was doing and was recording someone that was pleasing his sexual desires"

Others fired back as they feel that for masturbating in public, it's now their business:

Laura @simplydenims said
"In a public place!? Now it’s our business"

Bryan @Smug_AF
"I was literally about to say this
It is now of public interest."

Meanwhile, some are worried about the hygiene and health effect of his actions. A Nigerian lady has sworn never to buy sugar cane again.

Ufuoma, Bellerin Stan Forever @Oluwabukunmi__: "And he'll sell sugar cane with this same hand, most likely unwashed. That's it! I'm never buying sugar cane again"

Oke Shams @Mrshamxy: "Imagine o, and he will still use that hand to sell sugar cane for you, and you too will be chewing it, as if your life depended on it, SMH."

Newcastle United Vs Manchester United (1 - 0) Live

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is, as the cliche states, “saying all the right things.” What else is he supposed to say, given the dire straights the club is in right now, other than stay the course, it’s going to be a very long rebuild.

However, at the same time, his remarks sometimes come off like a real life version of the “this is fine” dog in the burning house meme. The club’s worst start in 30 years is what it is, and you just can’t put lipstick on that pig. Sitting in tenth place, with just two Premier League wins as they head into their last match before the second international break, is unacceptable at Old Trafford.

“I just know sometimes when you walk off games, we’re not doing bad here,” Solskjaer said at his weekly news conference ahead of the trip to Newcastle United.

“Sometimes there’s a gap. I’ve felt that a couple of times but not very often. I can’t think about what anyone else is thinking about us. We will need to improve and that is what we have to do.”

The goal for this season was top four, and that looks extremely unlikely right now. Actually, the top six will be a mighty struggle, and that shows you how far the club has fallen from the Sir Alex Ferguson led heyday.

Solskjaer played under Sir Alex, and he referenced Fergie Time, and how it’s light years away right now.

FG Barricades Unity Fountain Abuja - Oby Ezekwesili Reacts, Threatens Lawsuit (Video)

Former Nigerian Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has threatened to file a lawsuit against the Federal Government for allegedly building a barricade around the Unity Fountain in Abuja.

In a video shared by Mrs Oby on her official Twitter page on Saturday, some people were seeing at the fountain with barricade almost around it.

Before the Federal Government allegedly barricaded it, the Unity Fountain until now was an open space where anyone can walk in to relax or organize a protest.

According to the former minister in her tweet, whose hitherto uses the same fountain for the convergence of the Bring Back Our Girls campaigners, “this move by the Federal government will end in tears”.

“Kole werk” Oby added as she threatened to file lawsuit against the Federal government if the barricade is not pulled down.

“See what the repressive but weak administration of ⁦President Buhari⁩ is doing to the Unity Fountain — the Public Space that has become a Symbol of Citizens’ Freedom to Assemble.

“Trust me, kole werk. Mba.

“Mr Buhari, your government gave a contract to Julius Berger to barricade the Unity Fountain?

“What an assault on our Democracy!

“You actually think that by walling up the Unity Fountain, your Nigeria Government will control Citizens’ Right to Assemble? Naaa.

“Let me offer free counsel to our ⁦President⁩ ⁦Buhari⁩. Ask your contractors to pull down the fence and roll back their construction equipment of Unity Fountain now.

“This act of stifling Citizens’ Voice will end in tears. But it won’t be Citizens crying, Sir!

“This will not happen. +

“As ⁦Kabrik⁩ so profoundly said in this clip, ⁦Buhari⁩ CANNOT build a Fence against the Voice of the Citizens of this country. Never.

“If within the next few days the ⁦Nigeria Government ⁩ does not take down those wires, ⁦we file a suit.”

She further stated; “Should Nigeria Government back up and now say that this wiring is to commence renovation of the Unity Fountain, our ⁦Bring Back Our Girls movement, all other citizens that use the venue and the Public should have been DULY NOTIFIED.”

“We are a DEMOCRACY,” she exclaimed.
