Nigeria Saddened By Christie's Sale Of Looted Igbo Deities Statues

Nigeria is "saddened" by the sale of two sculptures belonging to the south-eastern Igbo community, an official from the Nigerian National Commission for Museums and Monuments, has said.

A prominent art historian had called on the renowned auction house, Christie's, to cancel the sale.

Prof Chika Okeke-Agulu told the BBC the two objects were "looted" from shrines during the civil war in the late 1960s.

The items were sold for just under $240,000 (£195,000) in Paris.

Christie's rejected the claim that the sculptures were stolen, saying the Monday sale was perfectly legal.

The wooden objects about 1.5 metres high, one male and one female, represent deities from the Igbo community, their hands face upwards waiting to receive sacrifices and gifts.

Why is the sale so controversial?

Central to the controversy is when the statues were taken and where from.
"Christie's ought not be dealing in Nigerian antiquities that were probably taken out at a time of conflict, contrary to the Hague Convention of 1954," Babatunde Adebiyi, legal adviser for the Nigerian National Commission for Museums and Monuments, said, adding that Nigeria "was saddened" by the sale.
The Hague Convention of 1954 was adopted to protect cultural property in the event of armed conflict. Nigeria joined the convention in 1961.
Prior to this Nigeria already had an antiquities ordinance law which made the trade of stolen cultural artefacts illegal, which was adopted in 1953.

The 1970 Unesco convention also banned the international trade in stolen artefacts.
Mr Adebiyi, who also advises the Nigerian government, says he believes these objects will always belong to the people of Nigeria.
"There is never going to be a universal principle that says something made by my forebears belongs to you in perpetuity because you bought it in an auction house. African antiquities will always be African, just like a Da Vinci will always be European."

Where did the items come from?

Prof Okeke-Agulu from Princeton University says the objects were looted from communal shrines in his native Anambra state, with the help of local conspirators.
He said they could not have been acquired legally because they were removed during the 1960s Biafran civil war, when the Igbo community attempted to secede from Nigeria.

"Growing up in Nigeria, we would pass by these destroyed and looted shrines and they would point to them, [saying] 'these were the shrines that were looted and destroyed during the war,'" he told the BBC.

The historian believes the loss of these sculptures has meant that a key part of Igbo cultural identity has been lost for future generations. He accused Christie's and other art collectors of "expropriation".

"To pretend we don't matter - what we think doesn't matter - is for me a recast of the colonial arrogance that we are still dealing with in other parts of the African continent," Prof Okeke-Agulu said.

Could there be another explanation?

But art historian Professor Clifford Nwanna, from Nigeria's Nnamdi Azikiwe University, says that more information is needed.
He says that in the past some local people chose to throw away some ritual objects or sell them.
This sometimes happened when people felt the object "was no longer potent" or stopped working as protection.
Prof Nwanna also points to the arrival of Christian missionaries in the area as another reason historically why some local people rendered the objects "as things that don't have much value".
"Some people were persuaded to do away with their gods, idols, and those statues," he adds.
He said the onus should be on the local community to call for the return of the items:
"They need to make a claim for the objects... because legally the community are the people that have the highest interest."

What does Christie's say?

It has defended the auction.
"The auction house believes there is no evidence these statues were removed from their original location by someone who was not local to the area, or that the area they came from at the time they were acquired was part of the conflict at the time," it said in a statement.
"Our understanding is that even prior to the conflict, local agents were trading in objects such as these and they were starting to circulate more widely," it said.
It added that at no stage "has there been any suggestion that these statues were subject to improper export".

How did the sculptures get to Paris?

According to Christie's, the sculptures were acquired by Jacques Kerchache, a French art collector and a close adviser to former French President Jacques Chirac.
But the auction house says it believes Mr Kerchache didn't travel to Nigeria in 1968/69 which suggests local agents were involved in initial trading, probably to Cameroon before shipment to Europe.

Odion Ighalo Usurps Zlatan Ibrahimovic To Equal 95-Year Man Utd Record

The Nigerian striker scored the Red Devils' opening goal in the 2-1 victory over Norwich in their FA Cup quarter-final clash on Saturday

Odion Ighalo entered the Manchester United record books on Saturday and became only the second player in the club's history to score in each of his first four competitive starts following his strike in the 2-1 win against Norwich.

The Nigerian forward has been a big hit since signing on loan from Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua in January, scoring five goals and creating one assist in all competitions.

He has particularly impressed in the cup competitions, and his strikes in his four starts against Club Brugge, Derby, LASK and Norwich see him equal the record set by Jimmy Hanson in 1925, according to Opta.

It means Ighalo could break the record in the next game he starts, which could be against Brighton on Tuesday, although he has yet to score in the Premier League.

Swedish legend Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored in his first three starts against Leicester, Bournemouth and Southampton in the 2016-17 season, but then failed to score in the 1-0 win over Hull.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was clearly delighted with Ighalo's goal against Norwich, which set them on their way to a late victory in extra time.

Speaking after the game, he said: "He's a proven goalscorer and played his part in both goals. He is a great person to have around the dressing room too.

“Odion knows how much we value him in and around the dressing room; he’s a goalscorer, a poacher, he’s strong, we can play the ball into him, he showed for the second and Paul [Pogba] found him.”

United will discover their opponents for the semi-final of the competition on Sunday evening, and will no doubt fancy their chances of winning their first piece of silverware under Solskjaer given their fine recent form.

I wonder what the man still wanted at 70. Our politicians are super greedy. Awaye malo kan ko si...which literally means everyone born of man must die, wondering why they still keep amassing so much even at old age as if they would live forever. This man wasn't an investor, neither was he a businessman. The money used belongs to the Oyo People. Interstate Travel: We May Increase Fares - NURTW

$

The National Union of Road Transport Workers has commended the Federal Government for lifting the ban on interstate travel in the country.

Acting General Secretary of the union, Kabiru Yau, called on the government to subsidise operation cost for motorists.

He said the guidelines outlined by the government for the resumption of operations amid the coronavirus pandemic require operators to carry fewer passengers on each trip, thereby reducing their income.

Yau said, “We thank the Federal Government for lifting the ban; it is a welcome development because it is over three months that our members have been out of jobs and without income.

“At least, our people will now start working and get something to feed their families.

“But at the same time, due to the spacing in the vehicles which will require the drivers to carry only nine or ten instead of the usual 18 passengers, the income of the drivers will be reduced.

“So we want the government to help subsidise the cost of those passengers that we will not be carrying or we will have to increase our transport fares.

“This is because the money that will be generated from the reduced number of passengers will barely cover the cost of fuel for the journey”.

“So, what is the gain? What will you give to the owner of the vehicle? So, the government should please help us look into this matter.”

On maintaining the COVID-19 protocols, he said the union would ensure its passengers obey the use of face masks, sanitisers, amongst others.

Emir Of Daura: "Insecurity Now Worse Than Civil War"

$

THE Emir of Daura, Katsina State, Dr Umar Farouk Umar, has raised alarm over what he described as multifaceted security threats facing the nation, saying what Nigeria is experiencing now is worse thancivil war. Dr Umar, who is the emir of President Muhammadu Buhari’s community, solicited for prayers, advice and goodwill of all Nigerians, especially elders, traditional and religious leaders in the country, to overcome banditry and other security challenges the way the civil war was overcome with such prayers, without sentiment.

The emir’s views were shared by Pan-Yoruba Socio-Political Organisation, Afenifere; umbrella body of Igbo socio-cultural organisations, Ohanaeze Ndigbo; and the Pan-Niger-Delta Forum, PANDEF.

While Afenifere said Umar’s view tallies with those of many prominent Nigerians, Ohanaeze said Nigeria was in an unofficial civil war. PANDEF added that Nigeria’s security architecture is no longer in a position to address the nation’s security challenges, stressing that it must be overhauled.

These came on a day Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai, asked members of the special forces deployed to Katsina State not to relent in their fight against banditry, warning that they had no excuse for failure. Don’t distract security forces, Emir urges Nigerians The Emir also cautioned Nigerians against “undue interference in security matters to avoid distracting the security agencies, more so since the President is a former war-tested general and a two-time head of state, who knows the military more than any civilian.”

Speaking when the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai, on operational visit to Army formations in Katsina State, visited him, the emir called for the same approach used in tackling the civil war to tackle the raging insecurity in Nigeria. He noted that President Buhari took over the reins of power at a time Nigeria was on the verge of collapse, adding that the current situation is like that of spectators who see all the faults in the players but cannot do better if given the chance.

While advising the Army Chief to remain resolute, focused and shun distracting comments from any quarter, the emir commended the Nigerian Army and its leadership for the commitment and untiring efforts to contain the myriad of security challenges in Nigeria and in Daura Emirate of Katsina State, in particular, since he took over as the COAS.

Dr Farouk used the occasion to thank the Nigerian Army for setting up a Forward Operating Base (FOB) and a battalion in Daura town, to enhance response to security threats in the area and surrounding communities, which had so far commendably assisted in providing the required peace and security in the areas. While praying for the military and all other security organizations in their operations aimed at securing the nation, the monarch emphasized the need for people to consistently support the military and other agencies by providing useful information on movements and activities of suspicious persons in their communities, for them to succeed in providing the necessary security for the people and the nation.

Lt. Gen Buratai was at FOB Daura and the 171 Battalion Daura, where he was briefed on the operational state of the Army formations to checkmate banditry and associated insecurity in their area of responsibility. Gen Buratai assured the emir, the emirate council and the people of Nigeria of the renewed vigour and determination of the Nigerian Army to tackle the security challenges in the North-West and the country as a whole.

He said his visit is in response to concerns occasioned by recent bandit activities in different parts of the region and Katsina State in particular. “Already, the Nigerian Army has commenced reorganization of its operations across Nigeria and that senior officers of the service are in the state to fully implement the clear directive of President Buhari to effectively checkmate the security challenges in the country,” he said.

Ogun state is unique among the states in the federal republic of Nigeria. It has the second highest HDI (Human development Index) in Nigeria after Lagos and unlike its contemporaries across the country, it is replete with several large and mostly developed cities spread across the state apart from the capital city. These include urban centres such as Shagamu, Ota, ilaro, Ijebu ode, Agbara among others. The state has a large population and is host to many industries and business ventures. It is basically Nigeria's emerging Trade and Industry hub after Lagos. That apart, it has some of Nigeria's best secondary and tertiary educational institutions.

This thread brings you images from the state capital Abeokuta that you most likely have not come across before in a way you have never seen it presented before.
Enjoy!

Throwback Picture Of Babangida And Aikhomu Decorating Abacha With His New Rank

$

General Sani Abacha was the first serving officer in the Nigerian Armed Forces to attain the rank of 4-star general without skipping a rank. There had been other officers that attained the rank of 4 star general before him, but they all skipped ranks.

Yakubu Gowon was the first officer in the Nigerian Armed Forces to attain the rank of 4 star general, but he was promoted from the rank of lieutenant-colonel to the rank of major general on June 2nd, 1967 (at the start of the Civil War), skipping the ranks of colonel and brigadier general. He was double promoted again on October 1st 1971 to the rank of 4-star general (skipping the rank of lieutenant general).

Murtala Muhammed was the next officer to become a 4-star general, but he was promoted from the rank of brigadier to the rank of general (skipping the ranks of major general and lieutenant general) after becoming head of state.

The next officer to become a 4 star general was Olusegun Obasanjo. He was promoted from the rank of lieutenant general to general in April 1979. However, Obasanjo had been promoted from the rank of brigadier to the rank of lieutenant general (skipping the rank of major general) in 1975.

Similarly, President Ibrahim Babangida was promoted from the rank of major general to the rank of general (skipping the rank of lieutenant general) on October 1st, 1987.

Although General Domkat Bali did not skip any rank on his way to becoming a general, he was not in active service when he became a general. Bali was the longest serving military officer in Babangida’s administration (he was commissioned before Babangida). He became the minister of defence in 1984, when he held the rank of major general. He retained the position of minister of defence with the added title of chairman joint chiefs of staff after the August 27, 1985 coup. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general on October 1st, 1987.

However, on January 1st 1990, President Babangida moved General Bali to the position of minister of internal affairs (he also retired the chiefs of naval and air staff and the inspector general of police) and made lieutenant general Abacha the new minister of defence. General Bali retired from the army the next day. President Babangida accepted Bali’s retirement and promoted him to the rank of general. Therefore, General Bali was not in active service when he was promoted.

General Sani Abacha become the first officer in the Nigerian Armed Forces to be promoted to the rank of a 4-star general (without skipping a rank) in October 1990. General Abacha held the following ranks:

1963- Second lieutenant (commissioned)
1966- Lieutenant
1967- Captain
1969- Major
1972- Lieutenant Colonel
1975- Colonel
1980- Brigadier General
1983- Major General
1987- Lieutenant General
1990- General

"Deity Has Chosen Me As The Next King Of Our Community" - A Nairalander Cries Out

$

....Good morning folks. Sure we are all good and managing the effects of pandemic well?. To God be the glory.

This is going to be long because I will want us to read and understand it very well before commenting. Reason is because any decision taken is going to affect both myself,my immediate family members, extended and the entire community.

I have been thinking about the way forward since December last year.

It happened that we lost our king (Eze) 5years ago and the community has been in turmoil due to the inability of the elders to select a new king.

Reason is that it is rotational between my village and the other village.

My village is now supposed to bring out the next king and my compound has been told to bring out somebody to be crowned as a king.

I never envisaged or dreamt of becoming a king in my life because.
(1) My father is still alive.
(2)I'm not the most senior in the entire family.

But then, the elders met me last December and told me that the diety in the community has selected me to become the next king and that I have to pick another wife from the community before I will be crowned.

I told them point and blank that the oracle is mistaken due to the reasons I mentioned above but they are not taking it.

Now everyone in my village is against me for refusing the offer and saying I'm doing it be cause I don't want to hurt my wife which is true.

Now my question is,What do I do?
Should I damn the consequence and pick another wife and be crowned a king in other to make my community happy or should I forget about the whole idea entirely and allow the community sort themselves out?

I'm confused here. N B. My wife is aware of all this.

Thanks.

Please bring this to front page cause I'm no longer myself. So many sleepless nights and selfish advices from the elders in my community. I really need to hear the truth from people I don't know.

Top 7 Nigerian Flops In English Premier League History

Top 7 Nigerian Flops In English Premier League History

42 Nigerian footballers have played in the history of the English Premier League since the competition kicked off in the 1992/93 season and while many have shone, some others have flopped big time.

The likes of Nwankwo Kanu, John Mikel Obi, Victor Moses, Celestine Babayaro, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Austin Okocha, Joseph Yobo, Osaze Odemwingie, Efan Ekoku and Shola Ameobi make up the top ten performers.

There are, however, some other Nigerian players who failed to make any major impact in the English top-flight. Complete Sports’ OLUYEMI OGUNSEYIN in this piece writes about seven Nigerians who failed to shine in the EPL…

1.Sam Sodje (Reading – 3 appearances/ 0 goal/ 0 assist/ 0 clean-sheet)

Okeremute Samuel Sodje who was born in England to Nigerian parents and represented the Super Eagles of Nigeria on the international scene did not have a Premier League career to reckon with.

Sodje turned down a move to Southampton on 31 January 2006, the final day of the transfer window. Much speculation followed until it was announced on 12 July 2006 he would join Reading subject to a medical with the move being completed on 14 July, 2006.

However, the move turned out to be a huge disappointment as the former central defender went ahead to make a hugely disappointing three EPL appearances for Reading all through the 2006/07 season.

In the summer transfer window of 2007, Sheffield Wednesday agreed a fee with Reading for Sodje with the player given the opportunity to think over the move. However, Sodje eventually joined Charlton Athletic on loan for the remainder of the
2007–08 season.

2. Julius Aghahowa (Wigan Athletic –
20 appearances/0 goal/1 assist)

Julius Aghahowa had been one of the most feared marksmen in Europe for Shakhtar Donestk, helping the Ukrainian Premier League side with countless goals that had secured several league titles and respect on the continent of Europe.

Finally, he would get his dream move to the Premier League but not to one of the top sides that had courted his signature in the past seasons and instead to a really struggling Wigan Athletic side where he himself also struggled.

A year and a half with the Latics yielded no fun, no drama and not one single goal for the Nigerian striker after making as many as 20 appearances and the Premier League honeymoon was quickly brought to an abrupt end.

And by not finding the back of the net even on just one occasion for Wigan in the English top-flight, one would be forgiven if one thought that the pacy forward was actually deployed in the defense.

3. Ahmed Musa (Leicester City)
21 appearances/2 goals/0 assist)

When Ahmed Musa joined Leicester City in the summer transfer window of 2016, he joined them, having conquered all and sundry in the Russian Premier League with former club, CSKA Moscow where he won three titles, one FA Cup and two Super Cups.

It is, however, so sad that the Super Eagles captain could only score on two occasions before making his departure from the Foxes in the year 2018. His name also emerged among the worst players in Premier League history.

The forward who now plays for Al Nassr FC in the Saudi Arabian professional Football League has been mentioned in FourFourTwo
magazine’s to be one of the worst 50 players in the history of the English Premier League.

Musa was ranked at number 44, having scored a disappoointing two goals in 21 EPL games in two seasons. Musa who joined Leicester not long after they won the title in 2016 had a disastrous performance in England.

FourFourTwo wrote in their report: “In the glow of their Premier League-winning season, Leicester broke their transfer record to bring Musa to England for £16.6m from CSKA Moscow.

“The Nigerian forward has always been an unremarkable and patchy player who most importantly didn’t have a natural place in the Foxes side. At no point in his 18 months at the King Power Stadium (33 games, five goals) did Musa’s transfer ever look
likely to be remotely successful.”

4.Isaac Success (Watford – 54 appearances/2 goals/2 assists)

Former Nigerian youth international, Isaac Success who is on the roster of Watford in England is another player who has failed to take his once very promising football career to the next level.

This is simply because the attacker’s situation at Watford appears to be deteriorating with lack of playing time and that has been the case under three managers so far this season.

Under three managers at Vicarage Road so far during the 2019–20 season, Javi Gracia, previous boss, Quique Sanchez Flores and incumbent, Nigel Pearson, Success has failed to get a look-in.

It is disheartening that the 24-year-old who won the FIFA Under-17 World Cup with the Golden Eaglets of Nigeria in 2013 has played only 54 EPL matches with just 11 starts since joining the Hornets in 2016, scoring twice and making two other assists.

The fringe Super Eagles striker has so far made a hugely disappointing five substitute appearances in the English elite division this season without even a goal or assist to his name.

Success will be all out to salvage his English Premier League (EPL) career which has been anything but successful when the 2019/20 season restarts on Wednesday, 17 June.

5.Danny Shittu (Charlton, West Brom, Watford, Bolton & QPR – 40 appearances/1 goal/0 assist/8 clean-sheets)

It is such a huge disappointment to know that Danny Shittu made only 40 appearances in the Premier League despite being on the rosters of five different club-sides in the elite division.

What this implies is that Shittu played just eight English top-flight games each for the likes of Charlton Athletic, West Bromwich Albion, Watford, Bolton Wanderers and Queens Park Rangers.

And a quick check on his record on premierleague.com revealed the Lagos-born Shittu who started his career at Charlton failed to play a single EPL game from the 2000/2001 season until 2005/2006.

He played for some English clubs apart from Charlton before finally tasting EPL football with Watford in 2006 and was a part of a defense line that conceded the most goals leading to the Hornets being relegated.

Shittu made a quick comeback to the Premier League with Bolton in 2008 but a mere 10 appearances in his first season and not a single one the following term ensured his EPL career did not go according to plan.

The ex-defender who is now 39 years of age who had 33 international caps for the Super Eagles of Nigeria was later unceremoniously released by Bolton.

6. Blessing Kaku (Bolton & Derby County – 1 appearance/0 goal/0 assist)

Former Nigerian international who attended the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Blessing Kaku is certainly one of the players from the West African nation who will not be proud of his Premier League sojourn.

The former midfielder’s Premier League playing career shows he made a move to Bolton Wanderers prior to the 2004/2005 season but after making just an appearance in a whole campaign, he was shipped out immediately.

Kaku who is now 42-years-old thereafter became a journey man of some sort after playing for five other clubs such as Derby County, Maccabi Tel Aviv, F.C. Ashdod, Maccabi Petah Tikva and Enosis Neon Paralimni.

His transfer from F.C. Ashdod to Bolton in 2004 is one of those about which the Stevens inquiry report in June 2007 expressed concerns because of the apparent conflict of interest between agent, Craig Allardyce, his father, Sam Allardyce, the then manager at Bolton and the club itself.

7. Ifeanyi Udeze (West Brom – 11 appearances/0 goal/0 assist)

Ifeanyi Udeze can be said to have had a quite impressive career on the international stage, having shone with the Super Eagles of Nigeria but his Premier League spell is definitely nothing to write home about.

Udeze played for clubs such as Bendel Insurance FC, AO Kavalas (Greece) and PAOK Thessaloniki before joining West Bromwich Albion in the winter transfer window of the year 2003.

In his first season with the Baggies, the former left full-back played in the Premier League, joining the club on loan in the latter stages of the season after which Albion were relegated.

Udeze who is now a radio broadcaster with Brila 88.9 FM was released from AEK Athens on January 2007, six months after signing a three-year contract on 11 August, 2006.

I left when she wanted me to stay. I decided to separate even when she wanted Us to be together.

It’s one of the most difficult decisions of my life. I knew I was breaking her heart but I also knew I could never be happy. I don’t regret the decision at all but remembering how much it hurt her makes me feel I really betrayed her trust.

There are certain times and certain relations in life that just aren’t meant to be. She is a gem of person.

I've only told this to one person and I've been carrying this one for 9 years now.

This might turn out to be a little long, so bear with me. When I was 17, a few days to my first WAEC, I was reading in the living room when my mom walked in and falsely accused me of sleeping with my own Dad... Oh, I'm a guy btw. I'm not gay, neither am I effeminate.

She claimed she saw my Dad touching me and that he slept with me. I was stunned. I went through different ranges of emotions. At first, I wanted to curse her, then I wanted the ground to swallow me up for real, then I wanted to cry, and then I wanted to scream, tears just filled my eyes, and the first thing that came out of my mouth was "Why are you doing this?" and then she just walked out. I just sat there losing my mind, I knew it was untrue because there's no way you would penetrate a guy without him feeling it, right? Not to mention the fact that I have no memory of this ever happening. And yet she claimed she saw this happening, if that was true, why didn't she stop it?

Long story short, that was the day my life got turned upside down by my own Mom. The not so funny thing is, she never once brought up that issue again since then, and yet she never apologized for it (not that I'd ever forgive her anyway). Dad has no clue about this issue, by the way.

If Barcelona fails to win and Real continue to win, it will be over before the D-Day.

Barcelona welcome Atletico Madrid to Camp Nou on Tuesday evening with Quique Setien's men now playing catchup in the La Liga title race.

The Blaugrana sit two points behind leaders Real Madrid, and Los Blancos having the better head-to-head record means the gap is effectively three points.

That means Barca can ill-afford any more slip-ups with six games remaining and will surely face a tough encounter against a resurgent Atletico side who have won four and drawn one of their five games since the restart.
These two sides played out an extremely tight game back in December which was settled by a superb Lionel Messi solo goal in the 86th minute.

Before the arrival of Simeone at the helm of Los Rojiblancos, this fixture tended to see Barca run riot with the Catalans scoring 23 times in the five home league games against Atletico prior to the Argentine's appointment.

Atleti have played seven league games at Camp Nou since then, though, conceding just 14 times and the visitors will feel they can keep things tight once more.

Barca's play has been noticeably flat since the resumption of the campaign and if there is one team in the division that knows how to nullify the attacking threat of Setien's men it is Atletico.
